Rainy Day at the Beach 12/30/07
Calvert County, Maryland, USA |

|

I headed to the beach on Sunday, and got there late as usual, around noon. At least 3 hunters that I knew of had already hit the beach that morning. I hoped that they hadn't found all the good stuff, though, and I wasn't disappointed. As it turned out, the first find of the day was also the best! Approaching my favorite spot, I saw another hunter searching the exact little area I was heading to. He left just as I got there, and as soon as I started searching, I spotted a near-pe... |

catching up...Trip from 12-23-07

The tide was high and winds from the east making for difficult conditions. I decided to hunt the shell line from the high tide the previous night. About 20 minutes later I saw a large Mako partialy burried in the sand. I could only hope it was whole. I plucked it from its resting place and cleaned it off. It was complete and at 2 3/8" my best from the bay. After that the rest of the day was uneventful with only small teeth and some assorted bones. ... |

Tried my luck a second day.

Today is Sunday and after the monster mako yesterday I just had to try my luck again. My goal was to dig a large section of matrix and hope for the best. I finished off the little area the mako came out of. Hit another spot right beside it…Then still with no luck decided to start attacking a rather large pile. I went through tons of matrix. Thr... |

Strange little Meg from the cliffs
Calvert County, Maryland, USA |

On Thursday December 27, I headed out to my favorite beach on the Bay. I got there later than I had hoped, around 9 am. I knew that the beach had already been hit by several other hunters. Walking through the water to the hunting grounds, I met a friend of mine, who is a very good hunter, who was heading in. He said that the beach was pretty well picked over even before he got there, and as we were talking, another hunter was coming up from behind me. Needless to say, my expectations were prett... |

So I finally own a digital camera so you all should be seeing alot more good posts from me...cliffs permitting. Anyway here are some interesting finds Ive had from the Calvert formation within the last year.
The first is a mystery bone I found why wading in the water. Looks like an antler to me but its hollow inside?

Half Off Surf and Turf!!

This report is from last Sunday. I was able to get down to the cliffs for a while on Sunday morning and even though the wind was blowing from the NE which means larger than normal waves and therfore harder hunting it still beats staying at home!! With the waves being what they were I was scooping up anything that had that "black" fossil look.
I ended up doing ok. But both the ... |

Unknown Fish? Fossil from Calvert Cliffs, MD
Calvert County, Maryland, USA |

I found this odd shaped "bone-like" fossil several years ago along Calvert Cliffs, MD. For some reason, I think it's some sort of fish bone/fossil, but not really sure. I actually have two of these, and they are identical. Anyone out there know what this is or have one like it?

This trip really could be called "Mixed bag part two". I had time for a quick trip this morning and once again I found a good variety of neat things.
Highlights include some porpoise ear bones, one small porpoise tooth, a single but nice cow, a bunch of good snaggletooth teeth with one having a deep reddish color, and what looks to be a thresher tooth. Lots of basic teet... |
