Early in November I took a trip to Calvert Cliffs in Calvert Cliffs State Park. Now, the park has a pretty tiny beach, but it seems to be less crowded, especially in the fall and winter because of the 1.8 mile hike to the water. It was cold and windy but I managed. Mixed bag from the bay

When going down to the bay this morning I didint get my hopes too high. The last fossil hunt I was on was at the famous Lee Creek mine in NC, and it would be very difficult to top that. The bay has been pretty picked over this summer/fall but I was hoping that some of the strong winds we had from the other day would release some new finds.

Wednesday morning 540 AM standing on matoaka cabins beach looking out at the bay. It was dark cold and the moon was out but not that bright Windy north 8-12 knots. This was our first trip in awhile and was worth the wait. Between me being sick and working on our living room we have havent been fossiing. The last time we did go it was in the low 70's !!! we were wearing shorts and i was barefoot. It wouldnt have been good for me to go barefoot, the high was gonna get to 43 and cloudy. This weekend was suppose to be a quite time at the bay with just me and porpoise girl, however Jayson and Amy decided at the last minute to come down and Paleoscan was able to make it on Sunday so it became a fossil trip after all.

After a short stay at one of my favorite beaches where I had no luck except for a inch long upper hemi. I went to another beach a few miles south. Private community so i was hoping even though I was late getting there I would be the first one on the beach. No luck at that I saw footprints walkin the entire beach. I however didnt focus on the beach because the water was extremly low! I was picking up some good size bones and all the sudden.....A sweet 2.5 chubby just laying on the bottom... |

So basically it was a windy friday moning at one of my favorite spots on the cliffs. Tide was pretty far out but as i made my way down the beach I saw something that made me forget all about the tide. A FRESH FALL AND A BIG ONE. Well not a big one but a nice one. I walked towards it and hopped up. I could tell i want the first one to see it due to the fact that someone had already dug some of it up. Like many of my east coast counterparts, there has been quite a drought
here in Maryland for the last few months. Fossil colelcting wise, there
has also been a bit of a drought finding any kind of quality size teeth.
Well, last week it finally rained for three and a half days, with some
heavy downpours mixed in. I was chomping at the bit to see what the

well we thought that the winds were going to be alot worse then they really were and stopped by Brownies before heading out on the boat. Brownies was boring as usual, hardly any teeth and a bunch of people, when we got to our usual location( Chris was there, his trip on 9-13-07), we did quite good, I found a nice mako and some hemi's, 4 BROKEN MEG'S!!!!! and a crab, its the thing 2nd in at the top right. I even found a nice porpoise jaw section. The worst part is this trip would be the start of ... |

Hit my favorite beach this morning, and I got there real late with the great beltway traffic. To my surprise I was going to be the first one down the shore.
The conditions looked great, and I had a nice trip (was hoping to grab a meg...but not today). I did find a real nice 1.5" hemi, an angel shark tooth and a real nice vert, but the interesting find is what looks to be a fossil bird skull. I could be wrong, a... |
