We arrived at our normal spot soon after sunrise with an hour to low tide.The beach was mostly sand covered with no waves coming in ,it didn't look good. We headed opposite directions from the boat so we could get a pass in before someone showed up. I found bits of bone ,small teeth and 2 1 1/2 " makos .My son did a little better finding several makos ,2 squads and a broken chub . we wern't alone after that someone from the mgs had came down the beach. I guess she wasn't watching the groun... |

Well, after 16 years of looking for a honker it finally happened, just not as expected. For years I only knew of and/or had access to one place to fossil hunt. During those first painful years the best area was a long 1.5 mile one way walk northward over a long, flat stretch of beach with little finds to an outcrop that always seemed to produce some fossil goodies. It was always disheartening though to walk the 1.25 miles to see a local come down 100 yards ... |

You can't find a whole meg every trip , but you can sure try! This fossil adventure is more about what could have been, then what did happen. It still was a good trip. The day began heading to the Calvert area a few hours before low tide. After finding one spot closed, we stopped for lunch and found the locals quite helpful with pointing out some spots. Arriving on the beach we were met with the surreal image of a silent but pretty crammed beach full of people with heads in collanders. At that moment, I realized the possibility of finding ones like I did with my brother in Summerville just reached nil.

Three days have past since half of the eastern seaboard experienced the "perfect storm", at least for this year. The day started off very calm, and clear and the tide was low with no waves, close to the boat my father found 1 beautiful croc tooth and another that was a little worn, for me i found a 1.5in mako and a hemi out in te water aways burried under a little bit of sand. As the day went on it seemed as if there was not to much to find untill in front of me i found a nice megalodon tooth with no root and the a large chunk off a chub., so i go to tell my father about this section of some ok g... |

We wanted to get a good start to the day in the right mood for fossiling. After we left for our favorite spot we seemed to notice that the day may not be as great as we thought it would be. The waves were rolling in and only scraping away at the sand that was covering the stuff under the beach.

I recently broke down and bought a kayak for the sole purpose of harvesting 6" Megs from various regions of the bay and Potomac river. This was going to be my first trip to a completely new area along the bay for me, and any time you get to hunt a new place its exciting.
