July 2006 Bay Trip

This was fossilguy and my annual post-education event weekend at the bay. We had visions of multi megalodons but ended up with none between the two of us. We searched over 20 miles of beach area over the 3 days covering 40+ million years of marine history. My finds of the trip were both firsts for me, a small nurse shark tooth and an intermediary tooth (minus the root) from the early Miocene (?).

Skull Report

After years of finding cool stuff along the cliffs and calling local museums to quarry skulls that I had spotted, it finally happened - I spotted a skull that was fair game for myself!! Only the very tip of the snout was sticking out of a huge block of zone 11 in the wash zone on the beach my friend calls “the batan death march”. With no plaster with me, I decided to just remove it in a block. Easier said then done…

These fossils were actually collected outside my house on the Chesapeake Bay. I was waiting for something nice to go with Croc teeth before I posted. Within about 2 weeks, I these two croc teeth and the two others shown in a previous post. The mako I found on a trip out in my boat the Squalicorax. Notice the pathological bulge on the side of the tooth.... |

Finally - One to Keep!

After years of hunting the Chesapeake Bay and looking for a “keeper” sqaulodon tooth I finally got one. The conditions were right – they were calling for highs in the low 50’s with a 30-40 mph NNW winds so I took the day off work and headed to the Bay. I arrived at 7:30 and hunted my favorite stretch of beach. Found a bunch of nice hemmies and few makos and was ready to turn around to head back when, for some reason, I decided to keep going, past where I usually stop on each trip there. Af... |

Well, it had been months since my last trip to the Bay and with the pending snow storm in the afternoon and a nice low tide in the morning this was going to be a search and dash day trip. I went to my favorite beach and it was prime. Gravel everywhere, nice low tide and no one else in sight. The water was cloudy due to recent falls so that could be the only condition to complain about on this trip. I didn’t find a Meg but I did find a large, uncommon porpoise tooth in excellent condition and... |

Mrs. Paleoscan reporting. Himself was waiting for some decent Bay finds before we posted. The invertebrates are especially for the SC boys! Himself was particularly happy with the croc teeth. The bison tooth was from a couple of weeks earlier. These fossils [land mammals in general] are fairly uncommon here so we wanted to make sure it was not a 200 yr old cow before we posted.... |

Long Time, No Bay

Well, it had been months since my last visit to the Miocene beaches of Calvert County. In fact, it was all the back in July with Fossilguy and Paleoscan that I was last able to sample some of the fossil treasures of my favorite beach. I visited my favorite site at first light and again at the end of the day but not much to speak of. I did find my nicest crocodile tooth from that particular site today. Day 3:
Site 7. This was a day spent on land. After 7 hours sleep (woo woo!!) we went to my favorite spot on the bay and found some teeth. Same spot that ditchweezil found his C-bay tooth at when he visited us yankees a few years ago. We were beat to the beach by a kayaker by just under 10 minutes and he found a nice small Chub not 20 feet from his pull in spot. I ended up with 2 small chubbies and fossilguy was down an agitated 0-3 in the Meg department. That didn’t last long... |

I was on much of the mega trip with m4 and fossilguy in July to the
Chesapeake region. I am happy to anounce that despite their best
efforts on the PAX, they did not tip over m4's boat. The collecting
spanned about 50 million years of geologic time which is why it is great
to be in this area. I live on the Chesapeake and can pratically pee on
cliffs of the Calvert Fm from my deck. As the fossil gods smile upon
me, I will post pics and descriptions of the enamel which comes my
way.

Day 2:
After getting 6 hours sleep (double the amount from the previous day!!) we headed out with a fellow (from here on know as Paleoscan) who is a long-time visitor to the ditchweezil site. Maybe we should get him an on-line name DW - what do you think? Anyway, we went out to some sweet spots on the Potomac River. Paleoscan has a few intermediary teeth, a crossover between otodus and ariculatis and we were hoping to add one of those to someone’s collection.
