Another Dive Trip...in a pinch...absolute zero visibility !   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA - Carcharocles megalodon
Well its been a little over a week now since the dive day, but life has been busy. I haven't been out land collecting in a while, but I managed to get in a diving day. It was an early morning wake up, a quick grab of my gear and ready of the boat and I headed out for some underwater recreation. We got out to the boat ramp as the sunlight was just peeking over the horizon. We launched the boat and headed out through choppy water and a bumpy ride. When we arrived at our destination I saw the water...
Dog Days of September - River Style   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA
Finally got a chance to dive the Edisto River this year after massive rains and high water. Gearing up was not so much of challange, but rather the sand in my eyes from a frolicking dog. I had have a nice chat with the pup to ensure tranquility. The two dives were tough with the current still rippin pretty hard. Viso was not great yet either from the silted river. It was nice to finally dive and find some fossils. Bagged a nice mako and one nice angy. DW did well also with a nice angy and croc t...

Well another year has come and gone for my birthday....every year svillej....toothhoover.....and myself get together for a week long fossil hunt the week of my birthday and dive the edisto......this year river is still way to high.....so we cleaned up my yard where river had flooded and rest of week was out to look for new spots.....we hiked about a mile through swamp and found a nice creek with a lot of gravel and started sifiting scored some great whites ......a reef shark tooth ..........a fe...
An educational (geology/paleontology) trip report on a SC Pliocene land site   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA

I’ve been studying the geology and fossils from a South Carolina land site that ditchweezil has referred to as the Pliocene land site for the past year.

A Cool Change   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA
Early Fall on Edisto is often a dry time; warm during the day but a hint of coolness in the air; even as her dark waters cool (use your finest Sothron voice) the thought of paleo treasures entices us to get one more hunt in. This time a mid-week dive was in order with DW and Gregalodon. With those tannin stained waters (in Sothron voice) beckoning we donned our SCUBA gear for perhaps the last time this season. The visibilty was not great; about a 1 foot maybe 2...head bumping into logs if swimmi...
A Quick Dip in the Tea   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA
I finally had a chance to swim the Edisto and collect....the river was low so we hit some known productive sites. Not an eventful day, but it was nice to collect paleo treasures from the river. My best find was a 2-1/8 inch modern Great White....not very common in the Edisto. ...
First dive this year...and the river gives up a rarity !   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA
So yesterday I decided to hit the river. I grabbed my gear and off I went...upon arrival I saw the current was ripping and yes the water was cold, but I was going to brave the elements in order to get my first dive of the year. I actually only brought one tank since I didn't get to the river until after twelve. Well wouldn't ya know it I get to my dive spot and my tank showed only having 1000 lbs of air. It must have been not closed all the way. Well I was there and suited up so I jumped in dete...
Megalodon Says it All!   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA
This one is to be remembered. Indeed. I had a chance to hunt with my serrated buddy DW et al at a land site in the Lowcountry, and of course to practice busting out some dope rhymes. We are fortunate enough to be able to sift the fossil bearing formations due to this sites proximity to ample flowing di-hydrogen monoxide. This site has produced pristine teeth, and also has a reformulated “lag” layer. Weezling has found a worn meg in this location on a previous trip, so we had a hunch that bigger ...
Summer Edisto Trip Part 2   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA

This is another trip from June. My brother and I couldn’t stay away from the river for long, and hit the same spot again. Not as many nice angys this time, but the quantity was still great.

Nice Pliocene Shark Teeth from Lowcountry SC Land Site   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA
This is several trips to the Pliocene land site. I combine them because we don't find a whole lot on a single trip usually. I saw some clearing happening so maybe they will start digging again soon. That would really bulk up production, but regardless I'm still happy to get out and hunt. One of the trips I got a nice cow shark tooth which was awesome. I do love being able to find those locally now. The only place I used to be able to find them was Aurora and we all know how those hunts have been...
Summer Edisto Trip   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA
This trip occurred sometime in June, and was the first dive of the year in the Edisto. My little brother and I took the kayaks out and paddled to a spot that I have not been to in over 4 years. I remember racking in the teeth at this spot, and this trip was no different from the last!...
A Fool for the City   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA
The first hints of fall were felt in the glorious Southland as temperature plummeted into the upper 80s during the day and around 60 at night. Dry conditions have kept the river low so DW and myself decided to don our wetsuits for one last paleo-adventure. We had a few spots in mind; and maybe some exploration; but alas…Artifact City beckoned and the 70s tune of Foghat ringed aloud. We geared up and eased into the tannin treasure trove and I fanned out a broken projectile point in the first hou...
Operation Axl   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA
Take Me Down to Artifact City, Where the....

Teeth are choice and the potsherds are, a’plenty.....Axl may not be impressed, but me DW and Weezling’s accumulation of fossils and artifacts will result in paleo-shock and awe! Operation Axl I dubbed this trip…the spot had produced nice finds when DW and Weezling swam upon this great aqueous treasure trove; but alas, it had not been properly fanned. The conditions were as ripe as a peach on a window sill: Incident solar radiati...
Noname Spot…For now   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA
As most of you know, we BRFC-ers like to name our collecting spots. Typically, after a collecting trip yields its finds, or an event transpires, we will name a spot. This spot was a newer one, and was located after endless hours of searching; its gravel beds appeared untouched. DW, Weezling and myself geared up and entered the tannin-stained waters in the ACE basin to free its fossils from their aquatic residence. It did not take long to find teeth sticking out of the gravel layer. The grave...
Return to Terra Firma   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA
We have been in the river a ton this summer so we haven't really been doing much else in the way of collecting - except at the miocene-pliocene land site. We go after every few rains, and these finds are from two trips out there. Even though there aren't big teeth like in the river, this site more than makes up for it with quality. One notable thing about this trip is that we found the first chunk of modern great white out there. Unfortunately it was broken, but I imagine what could be out there...
Hey Chuck Norris, Here Comes BRFC !!   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA
We had a special visit from the Phat Boyz to participate in the harvesting of as many fossil shark teeth as Norris-ly possible, if that is possible at all…stay tuned…more to come on that in the future…As for the collecting, we hit the same area of the river as last weekend and found more productive gravel beds. We didn’t really collect; the teeth just jumped into our peachy bags at of shear fear of being grasped by the mighty clutches of BRFC serrated brethren…The PB struck first with a spear po...
Racking my dreams   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA
These few days I have gone to the river have been pretty good I mean once in one spot I started to not find anything so I moved back a little bit 5 minutes later I pull up a 2 3/8 inch Flawless deseri. After that on another day We were about to leave so I made my last charcoles breath i hit the water then BAM!!! A Really nice way pathological Megalodon is sitting there....
Dad of Year Nomination Cancelled   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA
With the weather hot and dry the past few weeks, the river keeps dropping asymptotically towards a five year low. When it is low, you gotta go! It was father’s day weekend, and a BRFC family fossil adventure was set….We geared up and floated to a spot in the river favorable to carcharodon collectors of all ages. We had not collected in this spot in several years, and the layer was pouring out of the sand banks. I had two smaller Fosszs to aid in the racking and they did not disappoint. MiniFossz...
Diver Up!!   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA
The advent of hand-held recording devices, and Al Gore’s invention (the internet, of course), have certainly had an impact on fossil collecting. Shared knowledge and shared experiences are a just a couple of impacts that come to mind ---- so DW, crew, and myself decided to try our luck at the Edisto. I was informed of a cleared area near the river, and thought maybe some Native Indian artifacts may have been uncovered. DW showed me fosspitality and agreed to a quick land hunt. I geared up to hun...
Proper Fossil Hunting   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA
Summer has once again come around. This mean its time to hit the river again. After a not so plentiful first dive, I had a very copious second one. With a haul containing close to forty angustidens, 2 megalodons, multiple hemis and tiger shark teeth, and a small whale tooth, I left the river feeling pleasured and satisfied. I hope to provide the viewers of this site many many plentiful river posts this year.

Live long and prosper,
Megamouth

Fossil Hunting the South Carolina Pliocene   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA
This post covers the past month or so of hunting out at the new lowcountry pliocene spot. We've done a little bit of sifting, but mostly we have been surface collecting after heavy rainfall. The last trip just a couple days ago was the best - I got the biggest hemi yet recovered out there and the weezling got the biggest pristine mako so far. Good stuff!              &...
A Helping Hand from a Big Friend   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA

I'm in one of those phases where I am fossil hunting in all of my spare time. Not much time to post, but I'm doing my best. One of the places we've been hunting is the new Miocene-Pliocene spot. We haven't found any really big complete shark teeth out there lately, but we've been finding quality and who doesn't prefer that? There hasn't been any new digging in a while, so hopefully when that starts back up we can find some big stuff, too. This post is a compilation of several trips, a c...

The New Lowcountry SC Land Site   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA

Fossil hunting has been slow since Winter started. I really don’t know where to look anymore so I did what any sane fossil collector would do. I looked for a new place. Sometimes new locations can be found quickly, but usually it takes hard work and research. The quick method never works for me, so it’s a good thing I’m always looking. Good news! Work has finally started at a spot I’ve been watching for what seems like forever and my patience and hard work to find a new place to hunt fo...

Had a whale of a time.   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA

Hit the same spot again and though I did not find the quality of teeth, I found my biggest tooth (3/4th tooth) measuring over 6" and more than ten huge whale vertebrae.  The smaller meg is about 4" while the tewo smaller teeth appear to be a mako and possibly another mako or false mako (benedeni).  The picture with the vert stacked together in the backyard at night doesn't do them justice.  One of them is well over a foot and with l...

Drowning for Megalodon Teeth   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA

I headed out today despite the cooling water temperatures and the promise of poor visibility.  The water looked clear from the surface until my head went under a few inches and it was pitch black.  With my dive light, I had about 3 inches of visibility.  The current was pretty good so I pushed on feeling my way.  I found a bunch of bone which I kept for the fun of it until I finally put my hand on what...

Vertebrae Heaven and a catfish friend   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA

Well I headed to the river today to check out a new diving spot.  You never know if the spot will turn out to be a honey hole or dud.  The visibity was ideal and the water a bit cool.  I started on a sand bar which rarely produces and thus I worked my way around it hoping to find some gravel or layer.  It wasn't long before I found some gravel and layer and was putting junk in my bag.  I was finding bullets (some older than others), bullet sh...

Fossicking in the Edisto River for Giant Prehistoric Shark Teeth   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA

My wife taught me a new word - fossick - it means to prospect or hunt for stuff, including gold, gems, AND fossils especially in mines and riverbeds. I had never heard that term before but its a different way to describe what we do. No matter how you say it, there's nothing like fossil hunting anywhere. Being outside this time of year is an absolute delight, plus we get to look for killing implements of long dead monsters! How cool is that?

This was the weezling's an...

Edisto 2010   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA
Well lot's of these teeth are broken i got three benidini's 4 Angys a shamer meg  a cusped giant thresher i got a super awesome whale tooth a ray plate !!! ...
Now You See It, Now You Don't   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA

The weezling had been anticipating this day all week, when we would go to hunt for shark teeth in the Edisto River. Every day he came home from school, he checked the river level with his fingers crossed that the water level had continued to fall in his absence. Saturday came and he was already dressed to go when I woke up. It was time to take that boy to the river!

We arrived at the boat landing and launched. “Which way do you want to go?” I as...

The Code   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA

Almost one month without rain ---- the Edisto was low and a collecting fest was in order! After all, the Caracholoes Code (Code 3) states: "When its low, you gotta go"! I was propoerly Java loaded (code 37) and arrived at 'Darth' Weezils crib around 0915. We packed up the truck, and after some junior BRFC-ers arrived, we were on our way. With the river being low, we could try some new spot avec chitlins. We headed near the infamous spot --...

Weekend in the Water   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA

I have been fossil hunting like a madman lately. I thought the Edisto was done for the season last month due to a near flood stage surge, but now at the end of the diving season, unseasonably dry warm weather has given us a second chance to collect and I have been taking full advantage of the opportunity. Like my college days, I work at night to have my days free. Besides being a little chilly, collecting has seldom been better.

da fossz called me last week and we...

Maiden Voyage of my New Kayak on the Edisto River   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA
I bought a new kayak and took it out on the Edisto river to a spot we haven't been able hit much this year, and not at all since the water levels rose and then fell. After capsizing several times, I finally got my balance and was able to make it up river. My problem was that I was using a canoe paddle when I should have been using a kayak paddle. I'll need to get one of those before I go back out again. Anyway, all the teeth pictured below were exposed - I didn't have to fan at all. Its amazing ...
The Marble Spot   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA

I haven't hunted since the last time I went to the river. I stopped going because the Lowcountry of SC got into a really wet weather pattern and the river level went way up. Even though its never very deep, beyond a certain level the Edisto is impossible to dive. The current is just too fast and no matter how much weight we wear, it isn't enough. It'll blast the mask right off your face. Anyway, the water level rose so high that I thought it was done for the river. All the sudden the ra...

Hidden then found   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA
So i was getting out from school early so me and ditchweezil went to the river. Soon I had  found my ray plate then ten minutes later cmy Giant thresher with Cusp's  then after that he Came up with  a dude i got a big angy so i went over to watch him take it out the water it was a shame a tip ding 5 minutes later he found another one so i went to watch like usual and it was a superhero it was great. After we left I was mad we did'nt get to stay cause we had a prime location....
Having My Way with the River   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA

I have had a ridiculous amount of success in the Edisto river this year, and this post is no exception. We went to a site that we found a few years ago but only hunted once or twice last year. Its the first time we've been back this year and the fossils were literally everywhere. I picked up the shark teeth two or three at a time and I could not film them all there were so many. Big teeth, medium size teeth, small teeth, they were all there out in the open for anyone to pick up. I fanne...

Teeth inc.   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA
So over a couple of days me, ditchweezl and megamouth have been going to the river ditchweezl found a super hero and so did i but megamouth didn't really find anything compared to are teeth....
Siezing Opportunity   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA
We have been watching the river like starving hawks. As soon as the level drops to a manageable level, we're in it. Last weekend, we took a chance and went when it was a little higher than we would like and found out that besides for the lack of surface light it was pretty nice! Megamouth and I killed two tanks each on the same spot and both came away with great finds. Most notable for me were a near pristine 3 7/16 inch angustidens, a complete ray plate, and a massive chunk of coprolit...
A Whale of a Day   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA
With the great weather going on, it was a spectacular time to venture to the river. With our gear together, the Weezil and I headed out.

We ended up going two days in a row. On the first day, i went down, and 3 hours later, came up with a few small teeth, but also, three whale teeth. Not a great day compared to dw's finds.

Then on the second day, similar events transpired. Very few teeth. However, a good 30 minutes or so into my dive, i pulled out a...
More Success in the Edisto River   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA
The Lowcountry of SC is in the midst of a rainy pattern so we have had to seize the opportunity to dive the Edisto whenever the level is low enough and weather permits. Even though the water was high and the current was moving faster than we normally like to go, we settled into a good area and started working the deposits. The spot is loaded with big fossil shark teeth, but unfortunately most are broken or mangled by the constant sand blasting of the river current. I also found a nice quartz spe...
Driving the Gravy Train   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA

I got a new mask and I've been dying to try it out. It was still higher than we like to go, but we decided to dive a site that's up on a bank in really shallow water. When the river is too shallow we can't hunt the site because there's not enough water to make the silt move away. The site is very near the one where I found the two points a few weeks ago. Anyway, conditions were not ideal. It was overcast and that makes it tough to see and even tougher to film, but we were determined to ...

Let Us Remove Paleo-Treasures (and Artifacts from the Antebellum Era)   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA

DW , Weezling and I made a mid-week run to the tannin-stained Edisto River a few weeks ago to search out new spots, and, of course attempt to rack! We packed in the Summerville Frontier (official truck of BRFC) and geared up quickly....the scorching SC heat had made the river "parfait" with a pleasant temperature and nice vizo. I stayed back and found some newly exposed grav-elle beds and scored a gem 1-inch angustidens that had decided to right...

Walk Ins Welcome - No Ap-point-ment necessary   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA
I've had a doozy of a cold since I came back from family vacation. I'm finally getting better and today the kids were antsy to get back to the river. We didn't have a plan besides doing a walk in dive at an old faithful spot. Since we've hit it so many times, its tough to find an unworked gravel bed but we settled down in an area where a few rocks poked through the sand. Fanning the sand revealed a lot more beneath so we went to work hunting. We fanned out a few teeth but for the first part of t...
Keep on Rackin in a Free World   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA

DW and I had been eyeing the Edisto for several weeks; waiting for safe diving conditions to collect some fossils after an extended absence. I made the trip to the Lowcountry and met up at Chez Weezil jammin to the father of grunge.....The day was spectacular for collecting with bright sunshine and good viso; and after a winter of high water, we planned on a paleo-droolfest. The firs...

Edisto Death Hole   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA

Its that time of the year again - where the thoughts and fancies of fossil fantatics like myself turn to the river. The Edisto is warm enough now to accomodate divers, so da fossz and I headed out to try our luck. It was beautiful weather - radiant sun with no clouds whatsoever. With such bright sun, we had fantastic visibility. We explored new areas and found all kinds of great fossils laying out in the open, ripe for our eager plucking fingers. Like always I brought my underwater came...

Testing out my Scuba Gear for 2010   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA
Da fossz called me up last week and asked if I was down for the ceremonial first dive of the year. Of course! We had to do a preliminary check to be sure our scuba gear was in proper working condition for the rest of the summer's festivities. Our gear weighed down my little boat, but it was able to maintain floatation for its trip to the dive spot. We dropped anchor and with excitement we went under the chilly water for our first dive of the year. It was overcast so the normal light on the botto...
The trail of broken Megs...   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA
I must be crazy, but it was my day off and I wanted to get back in the river in my quest for shark teeth. I knew it was going to be rainy and cold and the water temperature is now in the 60s, but I was going anyway. When we arrived at the river it was raining hard and the boat trip to the dive site ended up being painful with raindrops stinging your face at 35 mph. Upon arrival I couldn't wait to hit the water...I dropped down and immediately started searching...the viz was about 6 inches which ...
Diving a different river...   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA
Yesterday I was nice outside and although the water is getting colder now I wanted to be diving for teeth ! We headed out to a river I hadn't been in yet. When we arrived the water looked bad. It was cloudy and when I hit the bottom I could see nothing. Zero visibility and super strong current ! Well I started feeling around in the murk and found a few whale verts, but nothing else the first dive. The second tank the visibility was tolerable, but unfortunately the teeth were hard to come by in t...
Last Dive of 2009   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA

Da fossZ called me mid-week and asked me if I wanted to go to the river this weekend. Of course I agreed, even though I knew it was going to be cold. Then I got an email from LC asking me if I wanted to to diving. Sure! The more the merrier! Then t$ joined in the fun, followed by Megamouth and the Weezling. A quick call to Edisto Mike and we had a boat full!

When we arrived at the river, it was windy, overcast, and cool. Not ideal conditions, bu...

Crappy loot from the Edisto   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA
This dive is from a couple of weeks ago. I met up with DW, DF, WLing, and Mike to go do some diving in the Edisto. The conditions were not the greatest for diving. The water temperature was frigid and visibility in the water was dark and cloudy. I did manage to find a nice squalodon whale tooth and what I think is an eocene mako (Isurus praecursor). The finds today were mostly crap and speaking of crap. I found the biggest coprolite I’ve ever seen!...
Big "Q"   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA

DW and I had been scheming one last river run before it got too cold. And after gazing upon his latest monster Angy, I was (Navier) Stoked!! Actually, I was feeling more empircal and wanted to deduce "h"....... This trip was fluid heat transfer 101! We suited up around 1100AM and quickly learned of a moving fluids' thermal capacity. I swam around looking for a nice spot to fan, and finally decided to work some layer for th...

In the River again....   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA
Well all these diving posts by DW and I was ready to hit the water again. I also heard a few new fellow hunters were hitting the river saturday and wondered how they were going to do. I have been a certified diver for over a year now and have had my good diving days and my bad diving days. I just want to remind everyone who is getting into diving in these rivers that it is dangerous and to be very careful. Anyway after spotting three gators(one 10 footer) on the way to the dive site I was very a...
Saturday dive in the Edisto River   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA
Aeromike and I returned to the Edisto for a dive Saturday. Vis was not great and the current swift. A 4 1/2" shamer Meg had my heart pumping until I pulled it from the sand. A few 2" Angy's and 2 pieces of coprolite completed the days booty....
The mystery tooth revealed.   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA

This is a dive trip in the Edisto from last month when the waters were much warmer. I found a lot of cool fossils on this dive. I remember fanning out what I thought was a small posterior angustidens at first. Upon closer inspection when I got home I realized that the tooth was not a posterior angustidens shark tooth. What could it be?

Then after looking it over I came to the conclusion that it was a very rare thresher shark tooth with side cusps!  I showed ...

Arctic Angustidens   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA

I can't get enough fossil hunting. I really can't. I try going more often but it just results in my wanting to go more. The weather is getting cooler now and so is the river. Today as soon as I hit the water a cold jolt shot through me like an megalodon attack at the north pole.  Normally I get used to the chill pretty quickly but I never shook it all day. But I didn't care! I hadn't found a really nice keeper tooth in the river this season and I was on a bend that I had not hu...

Answering the Call of the River   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA
Conditions were perfect so megamouth and I hit the Edisto again. We had bright overhead sun all day which made collecting extra special enjoyable because we didn't have trouble seeing and we weren't too cold. There weren't a lot of teeth laying out in the open today because we've been hitting this spot pretty hard lately. We ended up fanning the sand to find the fossils, and I think they were in better shape than the ones we found laying out because they haven't been exposed to the river to get ...
Clinging to the Carcharocles Lifeline   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA
We know the summer is almost over, so we're hitting the river as much as possible before the diving season is over. The weezling had a half-day today at school so when he got home the truck was packed and ready to go. Edisto Mike was ready, too, when we met him at the boat landing. A few minutes in his pontoon boat and we were at the dive site. We geared up quickly and were in the water asap. The weezling, still too small to dive, was ready before us and was eager to jump in the water a...
A Little Shiver in the River   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA

It's getting close to fall. The summer came and went in a blink of an eye and I haven't gotten enough fossil hunting done in the river. This week I made an effort to change that. Monday I showed up at the landing all prepared to go it alone, and Edisto Mike showed up. "I want to go with you! Let's take my boat!" I was all over that because else, I was paddling! I directed him to a site I hadn't visited in 2 to 3 years, so I figured it was going to be good collecting. ...

Awesome first dive of the year in the Edisto!   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA
Back to the Edisto   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA
AeroMike and I went back to the Edisto River again today for two tanks of fossilin fun. A lot of good 1 1/2"-2" Angys, a 2 3/4" was the best. A broken Squalodon tooth was the heartbreaker....
Finally Wet!   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA

This week the stars aligned and we finally hit the river. This is the latest I've ever had my 1st dive of the year, but I'm glad I got to go at all. This post is for two days worth of hunting.

On the first day, da fossz joined megamouth, the weezling, and myself on a gorgeous summer day without a single cloud in the sky all day. It's awesome to have a bright overhead sun because some of the light reaches the bottom. I fanned the sand for about 3 hours and came away w...

Cuttin through the Tannin   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA

Yes, I know....DaFossz has been absent from the paleo-postings for a while. I have missed yall as well. Duty called as DW dialed me up for a river trip to the Edisto and I practically tele-transported myself to chez Weezil. We hit the water in the late morning and the Carolina sunshine was about as bright as it gets. This made river viso great as the quantum packets travelling at 299,792...

First dives in the Edisto.   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA

After many attempts to dive The Edistio River, we finally got in. The group included AeroMike, OzzyRules and ToothHoover. Vis was better than expected and we located a good gravel bed and fanned+scanned it until we used all our air.

Angys were the most common tooth found, a few Makos and one GW. The other good find were 3 pieces of petrified wood.

...
unknown tooth 'please help'   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA
Can anyone help me identify this tooth this tooth was found in the edisto river and appears to be a Angy, but the tooth has four side cusp instead of two. There is ywo cusp on each side the tooth measure in at 3 1/2 inches. I tried to post this in the forum area and could not get image to upload. Thanks for any help. I am thinking this tooth might be in the time frame in between the Ric and Angy....
Family Tradition   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA

With our new found spot primed for an aquatic pillaging, myself, T$, DW and the two Weez-Boyzz all joined in a fossil bonanza. The day was sunny, hot; and the river viszo was pretty good. It did not take long for us gear up and start collecting. I found some nice layer covering Chandler Bridge and the binge began with a nice angy followed by a large squalodon incisor.&nbs...

Awesome day in the Edisto   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA

This is a past Edisto trip from a couple weeks ago. It was a good BRFC outing with DW, Da fossz, and Megamouth. I remember it was a great day and sunny skies. I had no problem finding quality fossils today. Two Parotodus benedenis in one day and a nice angy! Megamouth found the real p...

The Never-Ending Rack   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA

Just another day with the ditchweezil, the weezling, t$, and da fossz at the river were the racking seems to never end... for some of us.

River Recon Rack   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA

It was time to explore the river again, so I gave DW a cluck on his cell. No hesitation; mid-week fossilin was in order. We had to navigate the ever sifting sands, so this trip tuned into a reconnaissance toothin’ mission. Finally, after a while of searching, we found some tell-tale signs of a good hunting spot. We both signed-off for a few hours for an underwater toothfest. This was one of those days were the teeth were p...

Cant Work... Hunting Teeth...   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA
Da fossz called me last week for a mid week hunt. I tore myself away from my all-encompassing scandal for a few hours on a beautiful day. The water was a little cloudy from recent rains, but what's really the difference? This is black water fossil diving - is there ever a "clear" water day? We had to work for the teeth by moving a lot of sand, but both of us found some nice ones. My best find was a small posterior angustidens with a really thick root and a nearly complete stingray dent...
First Artifact from the Edisto   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA

This was a Rivrdigr Fest trip in the Edisto. The ditchweezil, dafossz, scuba paul, rivrdigr, and his boy all came out to do some diving. About the first three fans of moving sand I uncovered a cool looking arrowhead. My first one from the Edisto. It has been years since I last found one this nice. I was pretty much in gravy mode after that. Scu...

Look Closely at Everything You Find!   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA

It was a big day at the river last Thursday. It was Scuba Paul's last day in town and RivrDigrFest was still in full swing. We all converged on the Edisto for a hunt of epic proportions. In all, there were 7 of us hunting and we didn't put a dent in the fossils remaining just in the tiny area that we hunted. Everyone had a decent amount of shark teeth at the end of the day, but the nicest one I saw was Scuba Paul's 2 1/2 inch angustidens.

I myself wasn't especially e...

Bag filler - Episode II   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA

I hit the Edisto with T$ and DW for a two day blackwater fossil dive. We hit some newly exposed gravel beds and racked up pretty good. I found a lot frags (common with the reformulated layers), but managed some keepers. My best tooth is a 2" mottled angy; it looks somewhat like a land tooth.

Good trip in the Edisto.   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA

On this day I took my brother along and we met up with Da Fossz to go diving in the river. I found another sweet little parotodus and massive amounts of teeth! My brother found the super hero of the day though.

Black Water Diving for Fossils   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA
Fossil hunting madman da fossz called me earlier this week and we planned a trip for Friday to go black water diving for fossils. Unfortunately I had to cancel because tha weezling got into a wreck on his bike this and tore up his toes pretty bad. We had to postpone our trip until Saturday when mom would be home, but it was well worth the wait. The water was a little chilly from the recent rains, but the viso was awesome. We still had sunlight on the bottom! I fanned the sand like some kind of b...
Happy to finally get my feet wet in the Edisto   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA

I had wisdom teeth surgery a few weeks ago which stopped me from doing any dives in the river in order to prevent infections. After waiting for my mouth to heal over I was ready to go!

The River Needs Me   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA

Mother Nature has worked hard to provide me with fossil shark teeth to find and a place to find them. The least I can do is be considerate and go pick them up.

Sanford and Son Fossil Diving   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA

I finally made it to the river last week - three times! This post is a combination of them all.

Last Tuesday, our washing machine leaked all over the floor for the last time and we bought a new one. It served 12 years and was ready for the next part of its life's journey in the landfill. I got the awful thing hefted into the back of my truck along with an old air conditioner that looked like it used to be attached to a government trailer in the 1950s. Seriously, lik...

Sifting Sands   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA

The recent dry and down right hot weather resulted in a favorable river collecting in the Edisto. It had been a while since I scoured the fossil beds, and even longer since DW and myself collected. No better time than the present (please understand that “why put off today what you can do tomorrow” does not apply to fossilin’!!) I loaded up on the finest java central SC and made my way to DWs crib. As usual, I gazed upon hi...

Cyber - Restoration   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA

A few weeks ago, I uploaded a new version of this site to fix a lot of bugs and add some new features. Well, apparently I broke a few new things - thanks for the emails letting me know what went wrong and for having the patience for me to fix stuff! I just uploaded the corrections, so hopefully the site will be restored to a functional status.

No one really cares about my geekish babbling, so of course I have some fossils to talk about too! This post was from my last...

The Ace of Blades   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA

After the success of last weekend’s hunt, what could possibly trump my success? There is only one card to play……..

I have been collecting steady for about 13 years now and recent trips to the Edisto have demonstrated that the elusive 4” killer angy is out there. Unfortunately for me, all I have found are frags and shame-ers. Myself and DW decided a mid-week hunt was in order to break the hustle and bustle of our busy grind. We loaded up the boat...

B-r-r-r! The river is getting cold.   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA

Today, I decided to go do a dive at the Edisto. The sun was shinning and it was a beautiful day. The weather here had just dropped down to 40 degrees over night. I thought the river would have warmed up during the day with the sun being out. Man was I wrong. I wasn’t wearing a wetsuit...

Reminiscing About the River   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA

This post is from the beginning of the diving season. I was going a lot back then and I didn't have time to post everything. This is one of those that had to wait. I remember I swam the surface all day, but I really didn't find much. Its because we went back to Ye Olde Faithful spot that we've dived 100 times before. There isn't much left on the surface there. Sand moves, so there will always be something new to find, but probably not the quantities we got used to.

Punishing the Gravel Beds   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA

t$ has been an animal about the fossil hunting lately - I like that. He wants to go all the time, just like me. We have the bug. Diving has been so good that we can't stop. This particular day we went looking for new spots in a new direction. The first one we found was just in front of a bend where a creek joined the river. There was a lot of gravel, but it was really picked over, and we maybe found 2 or 3 teeth each. We headed around the bend, past two incoming streams, and onto a mass...

Fosszlin with Da Fossz   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA

Earlier in the week I called da fossz to see if he wanted to some diving at the Edisto. Before I arrived Da fossz already scored a nice whale tooth. I even watched him fan out giant angys that were literally a few inches a part from each other, but none were complete. I did come acros...

The Rack Continues   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA

This is a trip from a few weeks ago. I met up with DW to do some diving in the Edisto. We had to leave the river at an earlier time than usual today because I thought I had a class later in the day. It turns out the class I had didn’t start until next week

Parotodus Patrol   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA

I had a few hours to spare so I picked up my gear and hit the river. I've been in the zone lately so I was hopeful of a repeat performance. I was in the same spot as a few weeks ago when I scored the superhero angustidens. I swam over the spot where the aforementioned chomper was recovered and there was ANOTHER big root hanging out of the green. How could I have missed it when I was here last time? As luck would have it, I forgot my screwdriver so I swam the few feet back to shore, pick...

Mo’ Money   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA

A BRFC first occurred this weekend…T$ called me up to see if I was up for some fossilin’ over the weekend. With the river still low, how could I resist?? DW would be absent on this trip as he was retrieving prized minerals from the mountains of NC. T$ arrived with his posse’ of T$ family members around 11AM. I guess he was picking out his Hello Kitty gear. Meanwhile, I was beginning a decent day in the river around 10AM. W...

Chalk this one up to experience   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA

One of the best things about diving in the same general area is that I have gotten to know a pretty big stretch of the river pretty well. Today, I went to a spot that we haven't touched in several years. We killed there way back then, and I thought it was time to hit it again.

The first thing I remembered about this spot was how ripping the current was. The reason is because a small side creek empties into the river here, and the result is current that can easily rip...

Finprints in the Sand   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA

With the tremendous success that t$ and I had the other day, I had a lot of hope for the trip today. We were looking for new spots again and today we had little trouble finding some place we'd never been before. In this spot, the gravel was poking through the sand and we swam it from end to end, picking up a lot of stuff but it was a small spot and we quickly killed it. We had gone a long way up river, and we decided that rather than keep looking, we should head back to the spot we did ...

A Better Day at the Edisto   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA

I arrived at the weez’s crib on a some what good time. Today, we decided to scour out some new parts of the river. The first spot we hit was okay and we cleared it out fast. Then we both agreed to go back and dive the same spot from the other day where the DW racked and rack he did once again. I did a lot better this time and bagged a nice giant thresher shark tooth.

Feeling the Heat   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA

DW stole the day and racked an epic proportion of racks. However, for me it was not the same. I was gearing up and had a wetsuit on while it was a hundred something degrees outside. I took too long to get into the water and quickly baked in the heat. It wasn’t looking good and my eyes started to puff right up. I could barely make out anything on the bottom and my mask kept flooding with water as well. Well, I learned a valuable lesso...

Back in Rack   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA

t$ actually got to chez weezil on time today because of the excitement over the plans for the day. We were going exploring to secure a new racking grounds. Surely there were more areas of the river laden with fossil deposits!

We loaded our scuba gear (including my new BC!) into the canoe and headed up river from the launching site. The first new deep bend we passed was the first tested. The bottom was completely blown out. The onl...

A Victorious Day!   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA

Before this trip even began DW filled my head with images of large carcharocles. He said he had found one the other day that was three inches and in super hero condition. I couldn’t wait to see it. When I arrived at his house he showed me a three incher and it looked nothing like the way he described it on the phone. The tooth wasn’t attractive looking at all ....

Yielding the Day to He Who was Due   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA

After the other day of finding that really superb angustidens, I had to go back and search the area a little bigger. t$, hearing about the tooth before he saw it, was actually on time when he showed up to my place before our trip to the river. I tried to pull the old switcheroo and make him think a so-so quality tooth was actually the superhero. He didn't fall for it. He said something along the lines of "I thought you said this tooth was nice!" I showed him the real tooth, an...

Rack of Ages   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA

With summer winding down and the statistical peak of tropical storm season approaching, I felt another hunt in the Edisto was needed. I called up DW to see if he was able to collect, and after a resounding “yes”, a trip was underway. I met up with DW at his crib to view his latest serrated object from the river. “The prize” beauty angustiden was over 3” and freshly washed out from the Chandler Bridge. At that instant I decided the majority of my day would be spent fanning san...

The Prize   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA

When I go collecting, my goal is to find one nice tooth. Anything beyond is gravy. Anything less is exercise. Today, the universe granted that simple request in a big way. When I got to the river, my original goal was to go up past where the whale came from last week and continue to fan the sand from the ashley formation in search of more killers. On a whim, I decided to swim over some parts really close to where we wash our gear at the end of the day. There is layer there that washes s...

Returning the Artifact   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA

The last day of da fossz's 3 day plunder had arrived. RivrDigrFest was winding down and a fossil rich Edisto awaited We hungry fossil hunters. Rivrdigr arrived a little late - he was getting his Phos-foot on and got pinched by the man. Its all good - he assured us he has a budget line item for fossil related speeding tickets. I was finally able to return the Shovel of the Digr +2, entrusted to me on our BRFC day trip to Aurora last spring. I had used its powerful magics several times to...

Drawn To the Edisto Again   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA

Today, it was me and DW. We decided to try some new parts in the river. The first few spots were not productive and mostly covered with a thick sandy bottom which was void of fossils. It was quite disappointing, but it happens. You can’t always expect to rack teeth every time you go. In the end we just decided to go hit an old spot in the river that we knew was productive. I ended up finding a descent small angy to end the day.

A Fan of Fanning   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA

My last day of the three day fossil binge was a full day in the Edisto River. After RD made a handsome contribution to support our local community’s infrastructure he met up with myself and DW. We geared up rather quickly as the sun baked down. This was our last BRFC hunt with the mighty Digr during his SC fossil-fest, so I hoped his presence would bring me fortune one more day. We trekked up to our collecting spot and settled in by fanning around gravel beds. I started on my...

Edisto River Road Trip.   Colleton County, South Carolina, USA

I decided it was time to make the 8 hour drive to the Edisto to see if I could find any of the nice Oligocene teeth I have been seeing and hearing about for the last 15 years or so. I had no idea where to find the boat ramps along the river so I asked DW if he could point me in the right direction. He gave me the location of one ramp and so I began my journey with full tanks and high hopes. The trip began around 1 AM on Thursday the 9th, and I drove for several hours...
