Re: Welcome to the Shark Teeth Discussion Forum!
Nice home page. I live in Summerville and have a new found interest in collecting teeth and other fossils in the area. Who is the ditchweezel? I feel there is a need for an amateur club in the lowcountry ( is there already one?), what do you think? I was once arrested for tresspassing while looking for shark teeth. I think if we organize we would have a better chance of digging on private property. I really want to dig the Blue Circle pit and the Aurora mines! How can I get in on the digs??? Peace

Re: Welcome to the Shark Teeth Discussion Forum!
Sorry it took me so long to get back - I just saw your post. I am the ditchweezil. I am an amatuer fossil hunter from the low country, and I go out fossil hunting every weekend. I put up this site to share my collection with others, and because I really dig this hobby (forgive the pun!) Too bad you got nailed on collecting forbidden lands. It happens from time to time, but all the places I go are public-accessable. You just have to know where to find them. That's the hardest part. Creeks and ditches are really good spots. Try there for more spots. You mentioned starting up a fossil club in the low country, and I have often wondered why there isn't one. My guess is because the spots are so short-lived. The best spots are usually only accessable for a few weeks until they are closed or filled in. And the ones that persist aren't that good because they rely on erosion. Another reason is because fossils are so easy to find around here. Within a few miles of just about everywhere, there is a spot to find teeth. The places I have seen fossil clubs do the best are spots where its hard to find a place to find fossils. The clubs sponsor field trips, thus allowing people who wouldn't normally know where to go the opportunity to collect. You wouldn't believe the number of shark tooth collectors around here. Actually, being from here, you probably would! maybe someday, someone will start one up. You mentioned the mines. Aurora is HARD to get into. I just got in this year for the first time ever. I've been trying to get in for 5 years. I had a blast, though, and it was worth the wait. Blue Circle (they were bought out and are now called LeFarge, by the way), however, is a different story. They open their pit once a quarter to the public. LOTS of people know about it, so it doesn't take long for the huntable areas to get combed over. Last time I went, there were probably about 200 people there, and the whole collecting area had been covered in the first hour. I didn't find anything, but my brother did well. And I heard a guy found 5 archaeocetes. I didn't see them, I just heard. Its always worth going, but you'll seldom find the giant teeth you're looking for. But what certain is, you'll find TONS of smaller stuff. Happy hunting!

Re: Welcome to the Shark Teeth Discussion Forum!
Hi Paul,Traffic was at a crawl comming home on Miles-Jameson today and I kept looking at the roadside where all the digging is going on,thinking I might spot one while driving!I am new to the game but am totally hooked on it.A club could be a good idea.Have found all my teeth at the Bridges but it is dryed up a bit now.Got skunked for the first time in a while.I want to get down in that drainage ditch pretty soon, though it looks kinda nasty. Ditchweezil has a great page. Anybody else in Summerville want to join the new club? regards, Ron
