sand tigers/goblins
hey dw, i was wondering if you came across alot of carcharias type teeth in your digging, here in virginia i find quite a few and their identification is pretty confusing, i found a HUGE one last week, a perfect 2 and 6/10 Striatoloma macrota (i think), it is a very cool tooth and must be one of the largest of this type, what do you think? by the way i leave sunday for kiawah (can you find teeth on the beach there?) and will definitely be going to edisto to the inlet for some fossil hunting

Re: sand tigers/goblins
Hey Mason, Yes, we do find Sand Tigers here, and the species stuff confuses the heck out of me, too. I have no idea how to distinguish between then, so when I find something that fits the bill, I call it a Sand Tiger and leave it be. They are cool teeth though, and it sounds like you found a monster. Congrats. We don't have goblins here, though, that I'm aware of. So you're going to Kiawah. Its a nice place, but I don't think there are any teeth there. The only beach with teeth on it is Edisto, and you're going there. Good luck, and have a good time on vacation. dw

Re: sand tigers/goblins
you're right, no teeth on kiawah, i did go one day to the inlet at edisto beach state park, no luck seining since there was just too much shell material, i did find a couple of nice pieces of turtle shell by just looking for black in the shell pieces, a horse tooth was found the day before i went, probably the coolest thing i found there was a finger punctated indian pottery sherd (marked with someone's fingernail) that is about 3500 years old, i had a great vacation, was there during the big rain when you got out last week, wish i had known of some honey holes to check out, oh well...

Re: sand tigers/goblins
Congrats on your find. Edisto is a great spot for indian artifacts. The river is named for an indian tribe that lived along its banks, and I am soon going to start doing some diving there. A friend of mine said that he found an arrowhead or spear everytime he had dived it, so I'm looking forward to it. Just gotta find some spots. Everything eventually rinses down the river, though, to Edisto Island, and that's why there is so much there in the way of artifacts and fossils. Glad you had a good time. That rain was sweet, huh? I only wish I had more time the day it rained! Take it easy, DW
