How to Clean Tannic Acid Deposits from Shark Teeth
Modified By ditchweezil on 6/17/2007 2:40:51 PM)

Like a buffoon I have stumbled upon something that really works for removing the black tannic acid deposits from river teeth. For the heck of it I put toothpaste on an old sock, then rubbed the tooth between my fingers with the sock and toothpaste. The black stains just melted away! I couldn't believe it. It worked better than any technique I've ever used in the past. Anybody else ever try that with success?

Re: How to Clean Tannic Acid Deposits from Shark Teeth

I tried it with some of my teeth, but it didn't seem to work as well.

I'll try it again and let you know.

Re: How to Clean Tannic Acid Deposits from Shark Teeth
Thanks for the tip DW. I had mixed results with it. I worked great on the first one i tried, but not so much on some others. It seemed to depend on the amount of it caked onto the tooth. Some are a nice red/brown and clean up real nice, others get a little darker and i think are just too far gone. I actually use a dremmel and wire brush attachment whcih worked good in most cases. I happen to think the 'mottled' color looks really good too - when it cleans up in some spots and not others. At least they were "fresh and minty" at the end of it all.

Re: How to Clean Tannic Acid Deposits from Shark Teeth

When I went to Dorchester creek the teeth that I found had this thick black/greenish gunk on them.  Im not sure if it was tannic acid deposits, but the sand technique that Big Red Meg mentioned in another post,  with the addition of some dish soap, did what I thought was an amazing job on all the teeth.
