Diving Cooper River for the 1st time.
Hello All-  New member here and a Newbie to Fossil collecting. I started in May with a dive off of Venice Beach  Fl. and had my second fossil dive in July off of the Coast of North Carolina. This upcoming weekend I decided I want to try my hand at the mucky Cooper River -- any suggestions for me-- Thanks.

Re: Diving Cooper River for the 1st time.

I had heard all kinds of advice about diving the Cooper before I did it, but I was unprepared for the dark. I only took a little light and it was not even close to enough. Its pitch black usually below 10 feet so take a good light. I use a tank mounted dive rite cannister 10w HID that clips to a hard hat. LED is also good. The brighter HID and LED are a big plus for black water, plus the longer burn times make them obvious choices over halogen.

Be prepared for less than 6 inches of vis, though I have had 8-10 feet before. Because of the low vis, you'll be diving solo. That's the way it is with all black water diving, but its worth mentioning because this is your first trip.

There can also be a lot of current, depending on where and when you dive so you should wear more weight than you did off Venice. I usually wear more than 20 pounds there with no wetsuit. Speaking of wetsuits, this time of year the water is pretty warm, so you won't need a heavy wetsuit. I wear jeans, a long sleeve shirt, and coveralls.

Don't clutter yourself with unnecessary gear. You won't need a snorkel, a tablet, or a camera. You will need a decent sized goodie bag. You should be prepared in case your duty is to transport a mastodon tooth back to the surface! You also should take a screwdriver. Its very handy to help pull yourself along the bottom against the current.

Find a way to clip everything to yourself, especially your goodie bag.

That's all I can think of right now. I'm sure somebody else will remember something I forgot.  Stay safe and have a great dive!

Hey FossilMick,
I think you were on the dive with me today. I asked you how it was and you said you'd do it again - is that you?

Re: Diving Cooper River for the 1st time.
Oh, and FWIW - about weights and diving the river. The first time I dove the Cooper which was probably 7 or 8 years ago, I was way overweighted - to the point where my rather small BC really couldn't hold enough air to hold me, my extra weights and my fossils (I found a lot on those first dives) comfortably at the surface while waiting for the boat to pick me up.

This summer when I first started diving the Cooper again, I asked my local dive shop (I'm not from Charleston) how much extra weight they would recommend. To my surprise he said only a couple of extra pounds. With just skins, I normally dive with 6-8 lbs. For these river dives, I've been using 10 lbs and it's been great - maybe even a little heavy. FWIW...

Re: Diving Cooper River for the 1st time.

It must be a preference thing. I like wearing a lot of weight so I don't have to fight the current on the bottom. I have some weight in my BC and some in my belt so it is very well distributed. Plus I use the soft weights so they aren't as hard on my back and waist.
