PCS Mine Aurora
Ok, Im new to fossil hunting, yet I am starting to find out that it is not that easy to get a spot on the fossil hunts in Aurora. I've contacted Public Affairs at the mine and received a very informative email response that tells you about the hard hat and steel toe boot requirments. The email also stated to send an email request in mid august to secure a spot for the fall hunts. I have not yet had a response. Is that normal? I don't want to irritate or intrude because I releize that the mine does not owe me anything and that this is a privalage. I just don't want to miss out if at all possible. Any suggestions or common problems. Thanks

Re: PCS Mine Aurora

The first slots of the collecting season are granted to members of the Friends of the Aurora Fossil Museum which allocates slots based on service rendered to the museum. The remaining slots are given to various fossil clubs, school groups, etc.

Re: PCS Mine Aurora

Curtis Ormond, Sr., with PCS Public Affairs will be taking requests via email only from August 15th through August 31st.  The first few weekends will be awarded to the Friends of the Aurora Fossil Museum, then the various clubs will be awarded slots.  However, he tries to work individuals in to make sure we have a full schedule each day.  The first trips have been tentatively set for September 29th this year.  Make sure you make your request to cormond@pcsphosphate.com.

Re: PCS Mine Aurora

I'm sure Curtis is a little busy right now!

If you are awarded a slot please remember to bring those steel toed boots, long pants, shirt with sleeves, photo identification, and (if this Fall continues as the Summer) plenty of water!
