Hello everyone! Nice to meet you all. I live in Greenville, NC and my 7 yr old daughter and I got hooked on hunting sharks teeth in Green Mill Run over the summer. In fact, we were in that dirty creek so much, we decided to make our last trip a clean-the-creek trip and we pulled ten buckets of plastic bags, cans, broken glass, and other nasty oddities out of that creek. (In fact, my daughter has a plan to post a sign in Green Springs Park saying "Love not Litter" so if you see it, that's hers.)
Anyway, I would very much like to take her to Lee Creek Mine in the spring, but I have absolutely no idea how you go about setting something like that up. What is the process?
debeddie,
Richlands Quarry in Richlands, NC encourages youngsters to visit. You might have to watch her closely since the mine is active. However, the fossils are varied and there is lots of ID information for them--various websites and books. Call 910-324-7430 (Greg Meadows) before you visit to make sure they're not blasting that day. They are not normally open on the weeknds for collecting.
The Aurora Fossil Museum is also a good place to collect shark teeth. They have two spoils piles furnished by PCS. Their piles are open 7 days a week-even if the museum is closed.
