monster meg found off venice...
Modified By host on 5/19/2008 6:31:11 PM)

In an attempt to get  some activity on THIS forum i am linking you to some photos from a thread on scuba board... the tooth on page three of the thread was sold for $1000 the day it was found to the dive charter owner!

How do people find these perfect megs in the ocean everything i ever find has wave wear or barnacles and sea creatures!

Re: monster meg found off venice...

Why can't I see any of the pictures on the other forum?

Some teeth have just been exposed, and the ocean creatures haven't had time to attach themselves yet. Its like that in the rivers in SC, too. Teeth that have been exposed a while are all encrusted with stuff, while the newly exposed ones are pristine (sometimes!).

DW, I encountered the same thing.  Click on that link and then click the option to register for an account.  It only takes about 30 seconds and bam, you're in.  I must say that when I first saw the pic of the large tooth referenced in the original post, I thought it was a bone valley meg that someone took down with them on the dive and then claimed they found it there.  I wasn't aware that some teeth can come out pristine vs. the more commonly found nasty black, worn, encrusted junkers shown in the other pics.

Daryl.

Re: monster meg found off venice...
Thanks for the link! It reminded me that I need to post my last trip over there. I know what you mean about the usual Venice teeth not looking so hot. The Lee Creek posts on here give me a bad case of tooth envy when I look over my collection of "Venice Black Beauties". One time with Scuba West I dove Golden Beach and found a couple teeth that are in as nice a condition as Lee Creek teeth. I will try to post some pics some time soon. Its just a Hemi and a broken mako but you can see the quality. When I am there though its hard to give up the sure thing of the bone yard area to go dive in the very low vis and no guarantee of the beach. Next time I am going to do at least one tank in close however.
