Possible Aurora slot for Sunday available

Hello everyone. Im making the trip down to Aurora for the festival this Friday. I was originally going to bring a good friend of mine down with me but it seems now he won't be able to make the trip due to the holiday weekend. I'll be leaving my house around Glen Burnie MD at 1230pm on Friday.

If anone has nothing else to do this weekend Im pretty sure I could get you in the mine on Sunday. As long as you volunteer on Saturday and presuming I can get in contact with CMMFC and all things check out.

The slot already exists so I dont think there will be a problem. So reply to this post or send me an email through the site if anyone is interested

Re: Possible Aurora slot for Sunday available

Tony,  Who did you receive your slot from?  The reason I ask is you mentioned the cmmfc.  If you did not get your slot from the museum then there is most likely no slot for you.  There is a common misconception from some clubs that if you come down and volunteer at their table that you are able to get a slot in the mine and this is just not true.  The slots into the mine if there is a hunt are reserved typically for the volunteers of the friends of the museum club and some predefined people from other clubs whom all help with museum tasks.  Some exceptions are made, the cmmfc may have made prior arrangements but if they did not then I would say there is no slot for you. Also in years past there has been a total mad house about the hunt list and volunteers, where as a hundred or so people show up and expect to get into the mine.  Since there has been so much trouble in the past I understand that no exceptions will be made to the list this year, i could be wrong.  Also the volunteer list has already been generated but the tasks themselves will be dished out at the friends meeting Friday night with some friends people receiving tasking Saturday morning.  I don't have the list in front of me at the moment, are you a friends member?  If not you might want to contact whom ever told you had a slot in the mine on Sunday and question who informed them they had slots.  Hope you are good to go

Re: Possible Aurora slot for Sunday available

Tony,

Carl is only partly right in his assessment of how the after festival fossil hunt happens.

A bit of history---PCS has, as a reciprocal favor,  always allowed other museums (SI, NCSM, etc.) and festival speakers a trip in to the mine, assuming collecting was possible. Those trips were held on Monday. Later, that list was expanded to include those (a mixed group) displaying in the Education Tent and the trip day was changed to Sunday.. More recently, PCS has allowed an expanded group size to include the Friends of the Museum members --on space available. PCS determines the number of fossil collecting slots. Area of the mine, needed MSHA guides and available transportation are all considerations. There are never as many available slots as can be filled.

For festival--Each Education Tent group leader has previously given me a list with the names of their participants who were interested in the fossil hunt. If any one of the previous mentioned groups cant use their slots, their group leader turns them in to me. Your friend should return their slot  to the group leader. I will then allocate that slot to the Friends of the Museum.

To facilitate planning, the museum volunteer list is compiled far in advance of the festival. The Friends of the Museum has a Volunteer Coordinator who assigns jobs and determines who is most qualified to go on the festival fossil trip. That list is turned into the fossil Trip Leader and her helper Saturday afternoon. Anyone whose name is not on that list will not be allowed to hunt on Sunday's trip. Some people are already in Aurora working very hard at pre-festival chores. Showing up on Saturday and assuming a fossil collecting trip is not wise. No trip is ever guaranteed!
