just wondering how many trips into the mine before the great elusive meg was found? I've had the privilege of hunting 5 times and the score is megs 5 me 0 although i did score a perfect 3 5/8 mako over memorial weekend . don't get me wrong i've found great things and every trip is awsome almost like a kid in a candy store. was just wanting to here some of the adventures yall had.
Joel, That's an awesome question! Here's a link to Lee Creek hunts from Ditchweezil so you can see how long it took me.
All I know is, if I ever get to go, I hope its my first time
or if anyone wants to send one my way I will gladly except it.
i agree that just being able to hunt in this wonderful world of fossils is an experience of a life time. i also go in with a mental list and have yet to be disappointed or not find several fossils on my list. i figure when the mine wants me to have the big one she'll give it up.
I'm convinced its more luck than skill. Knowing where to look is just the minimum requirement.
Joel, I've been in the pit twice now, and haven't found a decent meg of any size yet, but Lee Creek always seems to give up something to make the trip worthwhile. My first hunt there was on the last weekend of the Fall 2007 season, and although I didn't find a single Meg, I pulled a 2-1/2 inch Parotodus out. This past spring, I found 11 Megs, but all were heavily damaged, and the largest tooth would have only been about 3 inches, but I did find a juvenile Great White, my first. I think that the real secret to Lee Creek, or any other fossil location, is to accept whatever the fossil gods offer up to you, and not to rate your success there based solely on the number or size of Megs you find.
Carl o'cles my wife and i were in the mine on the sunday after you brother found his meg, we were amazed at his story. i remeber thinking that lucky ***$#%@!!! (just kidding) we were happy just to see the awsome color & shape it was an honor to gaze upon it. as for her (the mine) she gave me several first this year, a cow a complete seal , a wahoo jaw with several teeth & 2 whale teeth. now were pacing the floors waiting for this fall.
