It depends on where im hunting. If its somewhere I always get to hunt, I usally only pick up perfect teeth, and the larger teeth. Now if I was say at the cliffs or lee creek, I would be picking up everything I saw, or at least until I got sick of picking up the little ones.
It also depends on the type of tooth. I find myself picking up every ptychodus tooth I come across no matter what the size is. I have a thing for those.
i have to agree with ditchweezil i pick up everything until my back goes or the eyes. ( i'ts depends on wheaties or carrots )
In VA the picking are sometimes slim so I pick up everything. But there are generally kids searching that don’t find any and passing along a small tooth is all it takes to get them excited about continuing the hunt.

It depends on where I'm collecting. If I'm collecting in a very public spot and the teeth are generally lesser quality anyway, then I pick up more, for the reasons above, even if plentiful. But, as time goes on during any particular trip, I may pick up but am less likely to keep anything that's broken, small, and common, but I check to see if the tooth is something rare or another type of fossil. This is because sometimes I'll see what I think is a broken tooth that I'm reluctant to pick it up, but when I do I find that it's a nice porpoise tooth or something that could make the trip. Sometimes I have contests with my daughter to see who has the best eye and finds the most (I always lose with my 50 year old eyes), so when we do that I pick up everything because I need all the help I can get!
To expand on Gimlie's point above, when on vacation at places like Myrtle Beach, while my family is splashing around in the waves amongst the hoards of people, I'm out there searching the beach for teeth. I always seem to give away teeth to kids and/or parents that have no idea what I'm doing out there, but have the curiosity to ask. Most people don't have a clue what I'm doing out there, and many that ask find a new hobby and are hooked from that point on. I kinda feel good when that happens, so I often give away as much as I bring home, and many times have as much fun helping them find them.
Man, you arent kidding about the teeth on the beach at Myrtle Beach. When we go there im glued to the beach while everyone else is busy doing other things. I found 3 GW's in the same day. My first GWs ever!! I couldnt believe it. The day before that I found my first tiger shark tooth. It was little over an inch wide. Huge to me! Then you get the people who ask the question. "What are you looking for" most are shocked, and almost all cant seem to find their own. I have watch people step over nice teeth in the past.
All this coming from a Texas person. You east coasters are spoiled with your sharks teeth!! With the amount and size of them.
