PCS Fall fossil season closed!!!!!!

Curtis and mine personnel have jointly decided to close the fall collecting season immediately.

We had problems this past weekend keeping up with reclamation progress and rising water. On Saturday, Candace had to close off some areas. On Sunday, I had to close off two more large areas that were plenty safe on Saturday. The reclamation is simply spreading faster than we anticipated--filling in valleys and causing rapidly rising water. None of us can keep up the pace it takes to keep moving the stakes. The area is now less than half the size we started with at the start of fall season and continues to get smaller. What area that is left has a large amount of Upper YT shell beds, clayboulders and Pungo rocks--areas not preferrable to most collectors. It simply can't support the 125 + collectors we get each weekend and give anyone a reasonable chance of finding good fossils. The planned new ramp cannot be put in place right now--one of the draglines is broken down at the exact spot the ramp was to be built! It will take several weeks to repair.

If you are scheduled for a fall trip, expect to hear this news confirmed by Curtis via email--but this is just a  heads-up to help you all make alternate plans. Hope to see ya in the spring.

Re: PCS Fall fossil season closed!!!!!!

And then I was sad...(sniff)...

Okay, here's a crazy idea- would any other members here be interested in a group hunt at Green Mill Run on Nov 15, the date we were scheduled to be at PCS?  I've never hunted there before, and have been wanting to try it.  I figure that since my wife is already expecting me to be gone that weekend, this might be a good chance to make the best of an unfortunate situation, hit GMR, get some new teeth for my collection, and meet some other club members.

Any takers?

Tom

Pat thanks for the information. We're all sad but we know safety must always come first. Hopefully we'll see you in the spring!

Re: PCS Fall fossil season closed!!!!!!

Pat, any idea as to what type of impact this will have on the museum by way of less people stopping by to log a few hours of volunteer work?  I usually use my weekend trip to Lee Creek to stop by the museum and offer up some sort of help, and I'm guessing that others do the same?  With the Lee Creek weekend foot traffic being removed, are there any projects or things going on that will suffer?  Folks need to remember that one way to get in on earlier trips is to log as many volunteer hours as possible, so even though their trip may have just been cancelled, they may still want to make the effort to put in the volunteer work to increase their chances for next season.  The Spring season comes to a close with the annual fossil festival that offers opportunity to folks to volunteer, but is there any similar type of event or project this fall that might encourage folks to still make the trek down there?

Re: PCS Fall fossil season closed!!!!!!

Daryl,

I suspect you're right about less fossil folks stopping by to help at the museum. But I couldnt honestly say what they need. Best bet is to contact Andrea if you have some free time to come. There's always windows to be washed!!!! If you have even more spare time, I have 24 windows in my house--all needing washing!!

Seriously, I don't know of any special projects coming up.

Re: PCS Fall fossil season closed!!!!!!

Pat, How can you not regard washing the windows in your house as a special project? I can't imagine how many awesome teeth must be in view of your plethora of windows.

Seriously, another way people can contribute volunteer time is to write something for the Friends newsletter. Much of what we've come to enjoy is written by members. I suspect that some of you out there are excellent writers and could easily pen an article to help us fossil hunters bear these dark days until next spring. Contact the newsletter editor for more info. He's "m4" if you want to use the Contact Us form on this site.

Re: PCS Fall fossil season closed!!!!!!

daryl    i'm bummed about this season. 2 of my sons are now of pcs age, we were gifted slots for nov 9th. the whole fam is going for the weekend we'll now make it a volunteer weekend of fri. & sat. what suprised me the most is the boys (sorry young men) were not as bummed as me. they said theres always next year old man. i think we all should still help in any way possible.
