Fossil Club?
(Lets start a fossil club!) We lowcountry fossil collectors are blessed to have some of the richest fossil deposits in the world right at our doorsteps. Yet there is no club devoted to our passion. Other parts of the country have theirs, lets have one for ourselves. It seems that few collectors are willing to share their "digging" locations. I understand why- no one wants to give away their prized find. And that's understandable. But I don't mind sharing my locations after I've reaped a fair amount of stuff, especially if its sharing with other amateur collectors, students and children. It would be great if we could meet once a month to show our new finds and share knowledge, stories and collecting locations. It would be great if I could pair up with someone and go hunting to share the experience. If I break my leg sliding down a slippery ditch bank, or get bitten by a water moccosin, It would be nice to have someone there to assist me. If I get arrested for tresspassing, it would be nice to have someone to help me defend my cause. Scenario; Lets say that I'm the first to scout out a new construction site, I sneak out on the property on Sunday morning and find some teeth in a retention pond or ditch. I pick it clean of the surface fossils and head home with my collection. Though I've picked the surface clean of fossils, there is certainly more beneith the surface. So I wait til the next hard rain to go back and see if more teeth are exposed from the rain run-off, only to find a contactor on site setting foundations for new homes. He tells me that I'm trespassing and I must leave the property or face arrest. Why is he so harsh? Simple, its liability. If I get hurt on his property and he gave me permission to dig, I can sue his company, and he doesn't want that, of course. Now lets imagine that we are a club, and we are organized and incorporated. We contact the contractor before the clearing and digging of the land has even begun and ask if we "the club", an organized corporation with liability insurance, can search for fossils prior to occupancy of the homes. I think he would be more apt to accomodate our request. Further more, we would be more likely to gain access to commercial mining operations like the quarries in upper Dorchester county and in Aurora, NC. There are numerous other benefits! People like "ditchweezal" have done an excellent job in sharing his finds and knowledge. But most of us are not able to put up a web site to show off our stuff. I heard a rumor that the annual Fossil Show at Cypress Gardens in Berkely County, SC may not go on as scheduled this year. What a shame that would be! If the show does go on that would make a great place to solicit members and to show off your stuff. Anyway. If you are interested, have experience in forming a club, or have reason not to organize, I'd like to hear from you. Peace.

Re: Fossil Club?
I'm game! Is there any way I can just pay my memebership dues and then you just fax me over all the secret meg locations? Ha! I don't want to make anybody upset or anything but I just plucked 321 teeth, yes 321, from a Construction site here in Florida. Got several nice mako's and a huge snaggle tooth. No Megs though or at least no whole Megs. Still great fun. Check this out--I even got my 60 year old mother out there on the site pickin up sharks' teeth. She loved it! Hope everyone has a great weekend!

Re: Fossil Club?
It would be nice to have some company looking for fossils. I got out today to Eagal creek. I found some teeth nothing whole except a small vert. Just would've been nice to carry on a conversation while exploring. email me if you'd like to go

Re: Fossil Club?
how did you do there? i haven't been in years, though i used to hunt it every weekend. you can still see my old dig marks in the bank. did you dig or just walk it? its very overgrown, so it doesn't erode much. the thing is that its GIGANTIC, and i haven't hunted but about a 1/4 mile stretch of it. collectors back in the day brag about what a fantastic location it used to be. i bet that somewhere along that canal is something awesome. digging just isn't the easiest way to hunt - but hey, we do what we have to, huh? dw
