SC hunting sites
Hi paleo-buffs, This Aug my wife, myself, and another couple will be vacationing in SC. None of us are true fossil collectors, but two of us are geologists and we enjoy poking around in the earth just because, and fossils are always enjoyable to hunt for. So we're looking for places to stop by. Our planned route is I-26 from Greenville to Charleston. Then follow the coast south to Savannah, then back to Greenville on I-95 or hwy 321. A perfect spot would also be a pleasant picnic area too. Its about having a nice time outside as well as finding fossils. Sincerest thanks and the best of luck to all the hunters, Nick

Re: SC hunting sites
Nick, as you come south on I26, you will cross I95.Just a few (5 or 6 miles) north on 95 is Santee state park where the Santee limestone formation is exposed. There is also an indian mound there with some excellent displays of indian relics including pottery. It is a very cool place to visit and maybe do a picnic with the family.

Re: SC hunting sites
Edisto Beach is on the way to savannah but a bit out of the way. There are teeth and bones there mainly from the pleistocene right on the beach. However, the beach is covered with broken shells that makes for difficult hunting. I you really want to see something cool. Take a side trip from savannah to Georgia Southern University in Statesboro and look at the vogle whale, an eocene whale they have on display. It is probably the oldest whale found in the Southeast. It was found 30 feet underground during the construction of the Plant Vogle Power Plant. They have a pretty nice geology museum. Call first to make sure they are open in the summer.
