diving calvert cliffs
I was just wondering if anyone out there has dived at Calvert Cliffs before? Or maybe snorkel, instead? Where do you find the teeth? What's the bottom like? I ask because I'm coming up there in a few weeks and I'm gonna do a little diving there to see if maybe I could chance upon a couple nice teeth. We're vacationing near there, and its so close that I can't pass up the opportunity! I don't know when, if ever, I'll be back up that way. thanks in advance for your help. dw

Re: diving calvert cliffs
I live an hour and a half from the cliffs, and I have snorkled, or attempted to snorkle at various points at the cliffs. Out of the 10 or so times, only once have I had any sort of visibility. Normally the water is heavily silted around the cliffs with that grayish clay, and visibility is inches, even in the bright sun. The one time I got a clear day, we found a ton of small and tiny teeth, but not much of quality. I have heard of people diving, but as I am not certified and cannot yet afford equipment or lessons I have not looked into it with any seriousness. Let us know how you do, good luck!

Re: diving calvert cliffs
oh come on, man! you KNOW i'll let you know what I found unless its nothing! I am not worried about low vis. diving down here in sc, we usually dive with 3 to 6 inches of vis. It'll probably be just like here without all the awful current, snakes, and alligators. that brings me to another question - are there any hazards besides falling cliffs there? do i need to watch out for rays, electric eels, lions, etc? :-)

Re: diving calvert cliffs
In some places there are sharp rocks, the occasional fishhook, or rusting crab pot. The water is pretty shallow and there are trees in many places. Some beaches have the trees cleared from the water, some don't. A pointy stump in the head hurts - trust me! The current is fairly weak. Calvert MD gets hit pretty quick and hard durig thunderstorm season, so poke your head out of the water every so often.

Re: diving calvert cliffs
I'm sure diving at Calvert Cliffs will be easier than diving the SC rivers. I tried snorkelling once, but I only lasted a few minutes since it was so cold. I'm not sure if they've arrived yet, but one annoyance is the jellyfish. I've never dived, but I heard that you should just look for rock beds 20 or 30 years out - the typical stuff you probably already know. Don't forget your glass bottom bucket, that will definitely help if you want to collect closer to shore. Good luck!
