Peace River
Hello My Name Is Logan, I Go To Peace River Sometimes And Was Wondering. What Way Would Be The Best For Collecting (Besides Scuba) And What Part Of The Peace River is Best For Fossils?

Re: Peace River
I have not collected there yet, although every time we visit Florida I mean to, it just always rains. Last year I made a couple of large screening pans with collapsing legs. I made both18"x18" and 20" legs. On one I used half inch hardware cloth metal mesh, and the other I used quarter inch mesh. Each has clothesline rope on two sides to shake the screens. A shovelful of river bottom into the screen will produce the fossils, just don't go too wild with the shovel so you don't ding up the good fossils. Some people coat their shovels with plastic resin to reduce the fossil chipping. I prefer the larger mesh because I'm sick of small teeth, I'm just after the bigger ones. I'm eager to try the river out, will be down there this spring hopefully. Good Luck!

Re: Peace River
If you have no idea where to go, I would recommend (a) join a local fossil club if you are local, or (b) hire a guide for the day. I went out with Mark Renz, who is available through http://www.fossilexpeditions.com. From what I have heard, anywhere you find gravel is good to dig. I went out last time with a friend down there that I met in a yahoo club (floridafossils), you can try posting out there and see if there are any takers for allowing you to join them. My last trip down, I waded into the river to shovel for them. I strapped a pool noodle (styrofoam float) around the outside of the screen and tied the float to my waist on a string. Mostly the river will do the sifting for you. Seemed to work out well - not that I got a giant tooth or anything. If it is shallow enough I would recomment snorkling for the best chances of a good find.
