North or South Carolina
Hello All!!! I am planning to move from Maryland to one of the Carolinas and need some advice. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what city, towns, etc. (preferably within 100 miles from the coast) would be worth checking out. I know that this site is dedicated to Black River fossils in South Carolina and figured someone may have some information for me. Any information concerning this topic would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks again guys.

RE: North or South Carolina
Not that I live in the carolinas or anything, but I have contemplated a similar move myself. Why are you moving? What do you do for a living or is that even a consideration for the move? Are you moving stricly to get closer to fossiling? That is the kinda stuff that may help people recommend cities. A number of real estate sites offer that kind of advice too. A quick google search yielded " http://www.homefair.com/homefair/calc/ls_basic.html?dg=ns&cid=homefair" Most of the sites also offer info on schools and crime and such. Good luck.

RE: North or South Carolina
Thanks ScubaPaul, I am planning to move for a little more adventure. I have lived in Maryland my entire life and have recently graduated college from St. Mary's College of Maryland with a BA in Psychology and Economics, but also plan to write books, create artwork, and dabble in photography as a side job. I am still deciding what I specifically would like to do for a career.

RE: North or South Carolina
I am, or was, in a similar situation. I recently moved (past 2 weeks) from Wilmington, Delaware down to New Bern, NC. I love it!

It is only 20 minutes to Lee Creek, 30 mins to Greenville (and Greens Mill Run), 40 mins to the ocean and Cape Lookout, 2.5 hrs to Nags Head, 30 mins from Jacksonville and some nearby quarries, lots of open space, friendly people, and it's cheap! I managed to rent a 2-BR home located only a block from the river, for 450 bucks.

But wait, maybe I shouldn't encourage you...I don't want everyone moving down here!

I don't know what career you are looking for, but I can certainly recommend Greenville, New Bern, Jacksonville and Wilmington, NC as wonderful places to live.

RE: North or South Carolina
Have you ever found anything good at Greens Mill run? I have only found small stuff there.

RE: North or South Carolina
Admittedly, most of what one will find is smaller, as most Cretaceous shark teeth are <1 in. But occasionally a Scapanorhynchus upper can be had in the 1.5-1.75 inch range. There are also mosasaur and even the rare plesiosaur teeth.

Worn megs can be found (our little group has found a few in the 3 to 4 inch range), but they're really water worn.

In contrast, however, some beautiful C. carcharias (great white) teeth can be found, sharp as they day they were dropped, up to 2.25". It's the only place I have ever been to where the great whites can be considered "common". A few hours at the creek can usually produce a few. The key is not to go when everyone else has already been there (i.e., during the Lee Creek collecting season, when Lee Creek visitors make this a side trip), but the dead of winter.

Good luck!
