tooth stuck in marl
Yesterday I found what looks like a big (>3") auriculatus deeply embedded in a chunk of marl. I think my chances of extricating this beautiful tooth undamaged are slim. I was wondering if applying a dilute acid (acetic perhaps) would be a good idea. The acid hopefully would attack and weaken the calcium carbonate of the marl and ( I hope!) not affect the tooth. Any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks

RE: tooth stuck in marl
i wouldn't use any chemical to remove the fossil. ideally you would want to use an air scribe and air abrasion if it is stable enough. if you don't have access to that, you're stuck with the old fashioned way - dental picks and small chisels. take your time. da f0ssZ did it when he found his set of archaeocete teeth. he said it took him months to do it carefully, but he put in the time and the fossils are unbelievable. if you're still nervous about doing it, you could pay a professional.
