Fossil Collecting in the Kansas City Area
Does anyone know anything about fossil hunting in Kansas City, Missouri? I know its mainly Pennsylvanian period (Paleozoic for those who don't know), but I don't know anything about collecting around here! Someone told me about a place around an Elementary school, but the school is a ways away. I'm at a loss of what to look for, what I can find, what I need, etc. I was so desperate I even tried screening my garden! I need help!

RE: Fossil Collecting in the Kansas City Area
The other thing you could try is just to go to out and scout. Try road cuts, construction sites, ditches, streams, or just about any place there is a big hole in the ground. That's all I do and it works out sometimes. Look for any kind of natural rock. Jedi Master told me about a place in Arkansas (I think) one time where he was at a little general store. Over in the corner on a shelf was an awesome mosasaur tooth. When JM asked the old guy in charge of the store where it came from, he said "down yonder whar they done cut tha new road." Turns out the spot has a cretaceous outcropping with all kinds of shark teeth and other interesting fossils. You just never know where they are going to turn up.
