Tooth hunting apparel
What do you wear to go tooth hunting on land? I've found myself wearing shorts and Tevas, but the Tevas aren't the best for slogging through foot-deep mud. And I'm nervous about snakes and the like. Any advice?

RE: Tooth hunting apparel
hey JC,
I don't come across rattlesnakes too often where I do fieldwork, but usually a pair of shorts or thin pants works, with hiking boots. You might invest in snake gators if you're worried about getting bitten. I know the Museum of the Rockies field crew chief uses them on digs here in Montana.
When i'm at college in MT, I wear long underwear and army fatigues, as they are warm and not likely to tear.

RE: Tooth hunting apparel
Bobby,

I just got back from Bynum, MT. I went on a multi-day dinosaur dig with a paleontological group out there. That was a lot of fun. My daughter and I worked on uncovering some T-rex bones and some Maiasaura bones. You're lucky to be out there where dinosaur bones are so abundant. Unfortunately, we couldn't keep anything we found (probably a good thing, though, for science's sake).

Digging out there, though, is different from digging in S.C., where everything is very muddy with lots of clay to dig through and lots of mosquitos, ticks, chiggers and poison ivy to deal with. The last time I went tooth hunting here I was up to my knees in mud in some places with mosquitos swarming around my head.

RE: Tooth hunting apparel
LaCrosse knee-high, rubber hunting boots . . . definitely good for slogging through deep mud. I just bought a pair.
