Lumberton, NC teeth?
Anyone ever collect the Lumber River? I was there on biz recently and managed to eek in a few hours pickin' and diggin' in the riverbanks in Lumberton. Squirrely stratigraphy: there is obviously a Cretaceous lag, and some Plioceney material, but supposedly, the Yorktown Fm ain't there. What little in situ formation is there had both Pliocene & Cretaceous teeth in it. I managed several nice Isurus, the ususal sand sharks, a half-dozen Squalicorax, but best of all, 6 large sawfish teeth! Also, a handfull of softshell turtle shell frags, croc scutes, petrified wood, coprolites and 2 small Psammechinus echinoids in matrix. Anyone know of any info on the place? Anyone been there?

RE: Lumberton, NC teeth?
Lumberton is much closer to me than having to drive all the way up to greenville. Do you think you could direct me to a decent area on the river to hunt? Im not all that great at spotting layers, and havnt really done anything but sifting up at the green mill run. So any help would be appreciated.

Good luck guys. If anyone knows of a place that rare or big teeth are being found it will not be shared. Notice the lack of replies in the Green Mill Run thread.

RE: Lumberton, NC teeth?
You could look for new spots. That's how I do it when there is nowhere else to go. Here's a hint. The NC Geologic map is freely available on the internet. It shows where all the layers are deposited, including the ones we all know and love from PCS. Compare that will the topo maps, also freely available from the net. Those show elevation and rivers & streams as well as roads. Remember that the elevation of the layer is not consistent. If i'm not mistaken, it should be deeper as you approach the ocean. Now you have more spots to check than you have time to look. Some will be worthless, some so-so, and a few will be spots of a lifetime. Another idea would be to make friends with some other people who hunt around you and then share spots between yourselves.

Keith,

I have friends that dived in the Lumber River. They found some well worn jet black "megs". I'm not sure where they dived.

I have looked on the internet and have not found any really good maps to this point. Is there anything comprehensive from Florida to the Chesapeake with good detail?

RE: Lumberton, NC teeth?
Nate, As for suggesting any areas: there isn't really any one "area". I had collected (way back in 1992) a spot just north of where west 5th St. & Route 72 intersect, behind an abandoned auto dealership. I remembered it as just a small gravel lag. I returned there this go-around and also wandered the river in both directions (i.e., upstream and downstream) for some couple hundred yards, and could find only a few small (and I do mean small: 10x10 foot) gravel patches amongst the mud, and simply picked through them. It is really, really spotty. Warning if you go: lots of poison ivy, clouds of mosquitoes, and it can get snaky! I wish you luck!
