I've been interested in native american artifacts for several years, but I'm new to fossils. I found something the other day, that I think is pretty cool and thought someone here might be able to tell me what it is. It was found in central NY and is in a piece of shale. It looks like a bolt was pressed into a piece of clay, so the threads are showing. It's about 1/2" wide x 5" long , indented into the stone about 1/4 " and is Very well defined. Somekind of worm??? Any info would be appreciated.
It sounds like you might have found a type of fossil called an Archimedes. It is a bryozoa that looks like a corkscrew. There was a lacy structure that extended out from the center column that resembled and acted like a net. I think the rocks in central New York are Devonian so that should help you pin down the species.
Thank you for the information. Is there a book on fossil identification that you would recomend?
I'm sorry to say that I don't know of any recently published reference that will help you. I haven't been keeping up on the literature that much. Most of the books I have are out of print. There are tons of books out there on fossils, you might have something useful in your local library, or you might find what you need online. Good luck.
I went to the library on my way to work yesterday. They were having a book sale and I was able to purchase several fossil identification guides. They are older books, but helpful.
