Looking for some suggestions
Hello everyone,

I am looking for some suggestions for a trip we are going to be taking in about a week.  My family and I are going to be going on vacation, and I would like to take the kids out digging for some fossils somewhere not to far away that doesn't involve any heavy equipment or dinomite :)

We are from New Orleans and are heading towards the panhandle of Florida.  We have a couple days that we could use for digging and the kids are young so I can't really do anything to far offroad or hard to get to.

Any Ideas?  I see some reports about Andalusia in the fossil trip reports which is right around where we are going.  What is the deal with permission to get in there?  I really can't get my children arrested :)

Re: Looking for some suggestions

I'm in MD and can't help with any easy collecting spots in FL - sorry.  I'm sure someone else can though?  I'm sure you've already done this, but for the heck of it I googled "Florida Fossil Collecting" and clicked on the link: http://www.flmnh.ufl.edu/vertpaleo/vppermit.htm.  It was interesting to read that for land owned or leased by the state of FL, you need a Permit in order to perform "systematic" collection "most" fossils, but NOT shark's teeth, invertebrates, etc.  - read the paragragh on "What's Covered" for details.  This apparently applies to both residents and non-residents.  It sounds like as long as you're not there for more than 3 days in a row, or using heavy machinery, etc, you don't need a permit and you can collect anything you want!!!  I had to laugh at paragraph 3 under "Systematic Collection" which also has a time stipulation :  "...or a maximum of twenty-four hours during a period of one year".  I had to laugh at the 24 hr limit, which to me implies the total/cumulative number of hours.  I would surpass that in one or two weeks and have to take  the rest of the year off - ya right!

Hope you find a place to take the family.  If the kids are real young, your best bet might be a nice open beach where the dangers (except for water, sharks, jellyfish ) are a minimum.

Daryl.

Re: Looking for some suggestions
Thanks for the link Daryl.  My kids are far from systematic at anything but making me gray so I don't think we would need a permit :)  I was hoping that someone would have some sugestions for collection sites, but no one here, nor at the 3 different emails I sent to paleo groups...oh well.  I lived in Birmingham AL for a while as a kid and we are now about 30 miles outside of it and are going to try some spots that I remember as a kid, though looking at google maps thinks have changed a might bit in 30 yrs.  I also googled and found a good page about Andalusia http://www.gamineral.org/point-a-dam.html Point A dam is a few miles North West of Andalusia but I believe that is Gantt Dam which is a few miles north of Point A up Point A lake.  We will be out there Sunday (crystal mining in lagrange ga on sat) so we are bound to find something!
