Ecphoras

I forgot to bring these Calvert Cliffs ecphoras to my last club meeting where I know the V.P. is an expert and could ID them.  I think? the one on the right is Ecphora quadricostata, but not sure about the one on the left.  It's rigdes are smooth.  I've only ever found two of this type, compared to several of the other "common" type. - Daryl.

Re: Ecphoras

They both appear to be variations of Ecphora meganae from Zone 17 of the Choptank formation. The primary areas that Zone 17 is exposed are near Matoaka Cottages on the Chesapeake Bay and Jones Wharf along the Patauxant River. In Zone 17 I have found Ecphoras with three to twelve ribs. E. meganae is an extremly variable species. E.S. got many of his specimens from me.

Re: Ecphoras

Both of these ecphora's came from Brownies Beach, both straight out of what was a fresh fall of zone 10.  These two were whole, and over the course of a week or so I picked up a few other small ones but were mostly broken.

Re: Ecphoras

Those are really odd for that location. Every Ecphora I have ever found from Brownies Beach was a three rib species that was uncoiled like a corkscrew. Did the material they were in look like they came from near the top of the cliff?

Re: Ecphoras

Never mind. I just re-read your last post and see they are from Zone 10. You have some oddballs there.
