Thanks!  I'll try the vinegar method first, I've got plenty of broken ones that I can use to test it. Can I do the same thing to get the matrixy bits off the roots of my sharks teeth?

The shark teeth are much more durable than the urchins so it should work. I have used vinegar and concentrated acetic acid to clean limestone off of 350 million year old shark teeth and it worked fine. You might want to use sandpaper to get as much matrix off the root as you can (without sanding the root) before you soak it in the vinegar, just to speed up the process.
