Edisto Beach
I am resubmitting this message ( I think I forgot to fill in the subject before) I went to Edisto beach this past weekend and found a few things of interest. Lots of turtle fagments, a parrot fish mouthplate, and quite a nice horsetooth down at the inlet. My question is do the fossils emerge from the salt marsh oly to be carried out of the marsh to the beach? Or are they from some other source offshore? Anybody know of any literature or have any answers to that puzzle? I would appreciate a little education. Thanks- Lee

Re: Edisto Beach
The fossils actually wash onto the shore from an exposed shelf in the ocean.

Re: Edisto Beach
Lee: To the best of my knowledge, there exists an offshore Pliestocene formation off Edisto Beach. This formation covers both terrestial and marine life that flourished during this time period. Other factors to create a "fossil" beach are the local current and wave action. Edisto, at high tide, has a tidal "drop off" that is a natural trap for fossils. Also, at the north inlet (Jeremy's), the currents deposit fossils more concentrated. I have collected at other beaches (Topsail NC, Mecklers Pt. in Ponte Vedra FL) and noticed similar situations. DF
