What happened to Black River Fossils?
You may have noticed that BlackRiverFossils.org dropped off the net for a couple of days. The server that hosts the site caught a virus on Friday night and died a slow and painful death. I had the rebuild the thing from scratch, and we're finally back online for your fossiliferous pleasure.

Re: What happened to Black River Fossils?

ughhh! I did it again. I forgot to open the server port to let the traffic out so when I rebooted the server, the firewall turned on again and the site disappeared. Sorry everybody! I would say we're up and running for good now, but who knows what other mundane detail I forgot.

By the way, MOE's contributions are always welcome.

Re: What happened to Black River Fossils?

Sometime on Sat when I'm done with house chores, I sit down to crack open the laptop and checkout my usuals - BRF, eBay, and eventually work email.  But wait a second, BRF's not loading...I get the nasty Error 404 Site Not Found web page.  I must have clicked on the wrong link or something, so I click on it again, but get the same thing....uh oh, what's going on here.  Maybe DW updated the site and I need to reboot my computer.  Did that, still nothing.  Maybe I need to clear my cache, delete cookies, bake some cookies, clean the house again, what?  Hmmm, could the site actually be down, nah, it's probably some other glitch, maybe the server he uses is doing some quick routine maintenance or something...I'll check back later.   Sat night, I go to check, same thing, no BRF, ok now what's going on.  Road trip to Summerville with cases of water and medical supplies, whoops, that was Katrina...call in some favors from some of my computer geeky friends, nope did that already to help get my Dell(s) working again months ago...what to do now?  Sunday:  we skipped church becuase two out of four of us weren't feeling well...time to go check BRF status...ugh, still no lifesigns.  Who do I call, ghostbusters is busy, our troops are deployed, and the waffles in the toaster have burnt again.  Email gets shot off to DW to inquire about BRF.....................

Monday a.m., 08:00 Hours, 13:00Zulu...email arrives from DW....he's on it and things should be back up!  I check, but nothing...oh no...minutes later I check again and whala, BRF was brought back to life, revived from the computer underworld, escaping the fiendish attack on it's host server.  After mega doses of antibiotics, the good stuff too like the stuff they reserve for the President, not the cheap stuff you and I get, BRF Server was innoculated and is beating once more.  ahhhhh.

gotta go, kids are ready for school and I'm late for work...

Daryl.

Well, it is flu season. Too bad we can't put Black River Fossils on a Vitamin C regiment.

Re: What happened to Black River Fossils?

this time we replaced the entire server, and we split the duties of the one server between three now. I can't go much further than that. until we get bigger that is.

speaking of bigger - anybody catch the latest membership? its 190 as of right now. imo, that's pretty smooth.
