So I am trying to pick out a new dive light. I am tired of my old beast of a light flooding and being so huge and heavy. The LED lights are nice but just don't give the light power of the HIDs or other battery powered lights and as more light can mean more teeth in the rivers, I want more light. So in looking round, I seem to be looking at the Dive Rite MR11 and the Dive Rite H10. Both of them are HID and both have the 8 hour burn time on the batteries. Not a lot of differences that I can see between the two - anyone have any other input? Or maybe have one of those lights and have any feelings about them? How much are additional batteries for example?

My only input about the LED's would be the "power" to burn through muck and haze u/w. The LED lights I have are great for night diving in clear water and put out a bright flood type beam. In clear water they illuminate quite well, but any particulate matter causes bad backscatter. If the reflector is built for a spot the LED it could be better for limited visibility. Just about any HID bulb only has a life expectancy of @1000 strikes and, as rivrdigr mentioned, are pretty fragile.
I use an OMS 10w Phantom HID. According to the manuf. specs the beam is focused at 6 degrees. I looked over the DiveRite specs and didn't see any information about beam focus.
OMS just came out with a new 21w HID that has a different bulb that "can withstand an amazing force of 25 g’s before breaking" and the reflector can be adjusted from 8-50 degrees. I have no idea how much it would set you back but I'm guessing @ $1500 at a minimum! Burn time would be an issue because the cannister only houses a 5.2Ah battery (180 minutes). The head is larger than my light and the battery cannister is almost half the size of mine due to a single battery rather than two.

That's pretty sweet.
I've found that the more lumens (like in your 21w HID) will cause a good bit of backscatter when the source is close to the eyes. AA batteries are pretty cheap too!
