This past weekend I found a couple of larger sperm whale teeth. I have limited experience with preserving these...any suggestions. I have found out the hard way that they are very fragile with a previous find!! At this moment I have them in a riker display and I have done nothing to them except quickly rinse them off. Thanks
Chris, I found one at Lee Creek this spring, and was advised by Pat Young to stabilize it with a 50-50 mix of Elmer's glue and water. She said to use a little paint brush to apply the mix instead of soaking the tooth in the mix. So far, it seems to have worked - a small surface piece fell off between the time I found the tooth and the time I got back to my car, but nothing has flaked off since applying the glue. Hope this helps!

At first when I started to find nice teeth I didnt want to do anything to them so they would stay natural looking. That all changed when I had one of my nicest whale teeth fall apart into about 15 pieces. For the first time this year I have used the 50/50 glue/water on my teeth and it seems to work fairly well. It allows the fossil to remain natural looking. And if you dont like it elmers glue is water soluble so it could be washed off on the surface.
Thanks for the info...definitely going to work on them. So its very similar to what I do to my nicer teeth now...that's easy enough!
