Tusk
I dug up the tip of what looks like a tusk in Dorchester county. I have about the last 7" of it. You can see the growth rings at the broken off end. Any thoughts?? MJ

Re: Tusk
Hmmm, can you give more of a description? What does the outside covering of it look like? Does it seem to feel abnormally heavy compared to other fossil bone? What is the overall shape...does it come to a pointed tip? Are there signs of cross-hatching (a repeated "XXXXX" pattern on the surface of the broken end)? Was it a land find or a diving specimen? Sometimes dugong ribs can look like tusks in that they have "growth rings" on the broken ends of the ribs, so you have to look at other features as well. If you could post some photos on the web, that would be the best bet.

Re: Tusk
I have a piture up in the mj1015 photo section of this web site: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/carolinageorgiafossils/ It is quite heavy and was found on land. I also found some pretty good sized Vertebrae in the same area. The growth rings are circular somewhate like a tree. The tapered end shows some wear that looks like it was created before fossilizing. I dont see any XXX. Thanks for the help. MJ
