Dredging
Sorry for the multiple postings, but I forgot to ask my main question.
Does anybody ever have any luck searching thru dredged soil deposits? I'm speaking of the kind where they slurp out the bottom of rivers/bays with a giant vaccuum boat (thinga-majig-bobby?)and then shoot it out onto shore/marsh/etc...
If so, any tips u wouldn't mind sharing?
Thanks,
dog

RE: Dredging
I have collected at two places in SC from dredging (by the state ports authority). Daniel Is. in Charleston harbor was good for me as well. However, last time I went I had to limit my collecting to the "beach" area (at low tide). Another older spot is "The Sands" at Port Royal. This is a public tidal river beach located in Port Royal across from Parris Is. Marine Corp Depot. Mostly smaller teeth and bone fragments (my largest and best tooth is a 2" mako) are washed from the old dredging. I am not sure if the port is actively dredging at this time.

One of my friends collects at Amelia Is. area beaches in North Florida. The fossils are a result of the dredging of the St. Mary's river to facilitate Navy submarine movements into and out of King's Bay Navy Base.

RE: Dredging
I have had success, but mostly in the 1-2+ inch range as far as teeth. The auger does a number on most of them. I have spent a lot of hours swatting misquitos and have found only one 4+ inch meg that had an intact blade and root, and it was not a great tooth (peel and river wear). I've found lots of busted ones! I have found some unique things, though, like a bony fish vert that was the size of a whale vert (6" long and 3-4 inches in diameter, complete stingray dental plate, fossilized alligator vert, horse teeth, etc. One big problem- vegitation grows year-round on the SC coast. It only takes a year or two to become a useless hunting area, habitable only by airplane sized, dive-bombimg, misquitos that have evolved to seak out, hunt, and attack prey wearing "Deep Woods Off"
