New one here
Hi
This is my first post on this forum. I am a collector from NYC. I usually collect in upstate NY and PA but i can travel to other areas if not too far. I haven't dont much in NJ yet but looking forward to doing it. I am always looking for partners to go hunting with, now probably in 2007, since it's getting rather cold.
If anyone is intersted, please let me know.
Also, if someone can recommend a good location to collect fossils in NJ or other areas around NYC i'd appreciate it. I know about Big Brook, Poricy park, Sayreville..but i heard those palces are pretty much picked over. I can , in turn , let you know about the sites that i go to. Also, I am more of a rock splitting guy rather than gravel sifting..but would like to look for sharks teeth also in the future ( i have only done it once so far).
I would love to hear from all of you..
thanks
Mike

RE: New one here
Hey Mike
My suggestion for you is to join the NJ Paleontological Society. It's very inexpensive, meetings are held in North Jersey close to NYC, they have a real good monthly newsletter (worth the price of membership in and of itself), they sponsor fieldtrips to various sites in NJ and throughout the Northeast, and last but not least, you could hook up with some fellow collectors who I'm sure would share some information about collecting sites in NJ. There is a fair amount of information about NJ fossils on the web. I would also mention that if one has the proper clothing winter can be an excellent time to hunt for fossils in NJ. Good luck to you Mike.

RE: New one here
Mike,
The cretaceous brooks of NJ have been collected extensively for a very long time- like all the way back to the late 1800's. The guys who had the "bone wars" out West, Cope and Marsh, actually spent alot of time in NJ collecting in the marl pits before they went out West. As you probably know, the first dinosaur found in the US was discovered here in NJ. Anyhow Mike, I don't want to blow the horn too loudly for NJ, but there are still significant discoveries being made in the creataceous streams here. It is true they are somewhat picked over from years of collecting by dedicated individuals and numerous school groups and fossil clubs. However, they are constantly refreshed by storms, new material erodes out, and you never know what that new material might be. So, while we rarely have the spectacular discoveries made by our fossil collecting friends in the South, rewarding collections can be made here by motivated individuals. I like the concept of learning about the area in which you live. NJ has a rich paleontological and I might add archeological history. Good luck Mike.
