Hi folks, My girlfriend and I went on our first artifact hunt of the season, here in central NY yesterday. As usual, she found the best pieces. A beautiful 2 1/2" - 3 3/4" scraper and a perfect arrowhead. I found a couple knives, but they paled in comparison. it sure was nice to get back out.

Re: New member

Thats cool.  I used to to a lot of arrowhead hunting along the Mohawk river.  I miss that but I have since taken up looking for shark teeth and its really fun.  The different variety of teeth added to other fossils that you can find make it a very addicting hobby.

Re: New member
That sounds interesting, but I wouldn't know where to start. Any suggestions?

Re: New member

I should have explained myself further.  I have long since moved to Maryland, and I look for teeth at the Chesapeake bay.  I think the closest area to you  would be in New Jersey.

Re: New member

Now I understand. I guess I'll have to stick to arrowheads.

Thanks Chris

Re: New member

Nothing wrong with arrowheads, I wish they were more accesible in Maryland.  Down here the quality of the flint/chert is nothing like NY, and land is on lock down with all the posting!  The limited access is very frustrating, that also includes the bay for teeth hunting.

Re: New member
Yes, we're lucky to have the quality of flint that we have here. Access usually isn't a problem though. Most people look at me like I'm crazy, then say go for it. I did have one lady that was totaly miserable about it. I thanked her politely and left. I'd love to put some pictures on here, but I'm not sure how It's done. I just learned how to use this thing a couple months ago.

Re: New member

I have some good pix of my New York finds.  If they decide to to start a New York artifacts board I will try and post.  If you havent looked by the Schoharie river, by Central Bridge off interstate 88,  its worth a trip.

Re: New member
Thanks! Is that in the Bainbridge area, or am I way off ? I know 88 runs along the edge of Bainbridge, but I may be thinking of the wrong river.

Re: New member

North of that.  Check a map for Central Bridge off 88.  This is a huge valley that has cliffs over the Schoharie river.  There was a farm called "Westhiemer Farms", they gave us permision to comb their fields, loaded with things.  You could also "fish" the river and check the fields along the banks.
