Say, does anyone out there know where I can take my sons looking for Native American Indian material in Maryland? We've actually never hunted for this sort of thing, but they expressed an interest lately and I'd really like to pry the Xbox-360 controllers out of their hands and get them outdoors. I live in Bowie, MD, not too far from Annapolis. I've had folks tell me to go looking in farmers fields, especially those close to the Potomac River area, but I don't want to trespass on anyones property. If you know of a "friendly" place to go please let me know. My sons are mostly interested in finding stuff like arrow heads/points and spear heads.
thanks,
Daryl.
Whereabouts in NY are you from? I grew up in upstate NY - Amsterdam, NY. I used to fish along the Mohawk River, but never thought of looking along there. My dad hunts his friends private lands and they are all farmers, but none of their land borders the river. I know of a few fields near the Potomac River here in MD that I might check out on my own before I take my sons there. They get bored easy and if we don't find anything after a while they'll be begging to leave - one reason why they don't go shark tooth hunting with me.
I'm near Utica, NY. I would think that there would be some great spots along the Potomac River. Are there any streams running through the farms you mentioned? I've found some nice things in plowed fields along little streams.
This is the New York and ex NY crew on this thread. I too am from upstate NY originaly and most of my projectile point finds are from the Mohawk river and surrounding areas. I actually got involved with looking for shark teeth because of the difficulty finding areas to hunt in Maryland. Any major river will most likely have points along the banks if its on relatively high ground. I always look for "fire stone", its kind of like looking for whale bones and Megs. Where there is fire stone there are usually points. The Susquehanna, Patuxent, and Potomac rivers are all good places to start. The trick is finding a property that will allow permission to collect. One other thing about arrowhead collecting vs teeth hunting. At least while teeth hunting you will pretty much always be finding something, while looking for points you can go for LONG periods and then only find a flake of flint. When I was younger I was bored out of my skull when I went with my father. After a while I got better at it (I like to think I did but Im sure my father must have planted some of those first finds), and eventually it grew on me.
