Nice finds BigRedMeg. I don't think I've ever seen pipes as complete. All nice pieces, but my favorite has to be the "elusive" large grooved axe. I can't seem to find one to save my life, and that's a beauty. After looking at your pics, I'm going to have to get out for at least a little while tomarrow morning. Thanks for the motivation.

BigRedMeg - Can't really understand why you would waste your time diving and looking for fossils. Why would anyone want those big old six inch+ megladons. Just being silly of course, what a great thing to have the resources and ability to do. Hope your diving continues to produce excellent finds. Got to say though, how rare it must be to find complete pipes like that in a stream environment. I could see complete pipes being found in a carefully controlled dig. Can't imagine those pipes spent too much time in the stream, can you? Seems to me they must have eroded out not too long before you found them. Although from the looks of them, they do have the patina of being in stream for awhile. No matter how you slice it, excellent finds and a great reminder to have the widest view possible when out and about. I have only a few expereinces of looking for one thing and finding another, and they happened in a concentrated period in April 2004. Out in a cretaceous stream and found my "best" flaked artifact, a high quality jasper Perkiomen point. Then, while looking for artifacts in a field a few weeks later, found a coin that turned out to be a 1793 large cent. In terms of monetary value, my best find ever. Then a week or so later found an 1816 large cent. Anyhow, thanks for sharing the story and pictures of the pipes.

I like the grooved axes and I have accidently found a couple but I would love to find a 1793 large cent. I find very few coins and the oldest I've found diving so far is from the mid 1970's. I have two 1794 large cents but I purchased them so they're neat but there is no thrill of discovery. The pipes are from an area that had a lot of hand blown bottle bottoms scattered along the river bank, in the woods, and a couple were in the stream. I suppose it could have been an old dump or close to an old road or boat landing. There are lots of "newer" stopper bottles in the rivers but I don't bother picking them up. It seems I find the more interesting non-fossil things in streams. One of my favorite pieces of glass is a very nice undamaged light blue Blob-Top beer bottle that was in a stream. What kind of condition is the 1793 cent in?

The 1793 cent is in real nice shape. Especially considering it has spent about 200 years or so in the ground. Over the years, found a few coins that I thought were pretty neat but had no knowledge about coins. Took them to an archeologist one time and he said they were worthless, too worn to be identified. Since finding the 1793, I have learned a whole lot about colonial era coins, and disagree totally with the archeologist's assessment. Two of them are British half pennies, one is a William and the the other is a George I. What this means is someone was occupying that field from the 1690's through the 1720's. They are worthless as collectibles, but provide important archeological information. Anyhow, when I found the 1793 could read United States of America and "one cent" and so told friends the best thing I found over the weekend was a penny. Only a couple of days later began to realize the significance of it. It got me going on colonial era coins and I now have a pretty big collection. Sounds to me like that stream you found the pipes in is a real interesting place to visit. I do run across bottles as well in local streams and do bring them home with me on occasion. The light blue beer bottle sounds real nice. I'll try and get a picture or two of that 1793 and put in in NJ artifacts sometime next week. It's a wreath, by the way, not a chain.
