Re: NJ artifacts
Hey Keith - Thanks for your observations regarding the argillite question. I'm not a trained geoarcheologist, but have spent alot of hours looking in fields. Here in the central part of NJ (Trenton area) tools made from argillite far outnumber those made from other materials. There is an extensive outcrop of argillite north of Trenton on the Jersey side of the Delaware River. Archeological literature suggests argillite makes up a proportion of the lithic material in most dig sites throughout the state. The proportions appear to decrease in the north and to the south. I've been looking at a very large collection from South Jersey recently and it has alot of Cohancy quartzite and various cherts but very little argillite. It's interesting that you saw alot of it up in New England. I would assume there were regional outcrops of it up there. Thanks alot for your imput on this.

Re: NJ artifacts
I probably should have been more specific. All the NJ sites that I worked were in Gloucester County and south, and it seems our observations match in that regard (qtzite & chert). I haven't seen any mid- or north NJ artifacts.

Re: NJ artifacts
Keith - It does make sense that you didn't see any argillite from Gloucester County and South. Collections in this part of the state are 60 to 80 per cent argillite with quartz, quartzite, jasper, and black chert making up the rest. I was curious how far the argillite trade networks extended, that's why the question was posed. Anyhow, thanks again for your imput.
