Re: NJ artifacts

Hi jp. The blade you asked about is 2 5/8" at the widest point, 4 7/8" long and is about 1/4" thick along the center. It's tapered to a fine edge . I assume that at one time it would have come to a point on the flat end and has about an inch missing, but I'm not sure. We do find artifacts that appear to have been made that way. It's one of my favorites

Re: NJ artifacts
Bob - That's a really good sized piece. Almost 5 inches is very large for a flaked artifact. As I mentioned, it looks to have super nice flaking patterns as well. And 1/4 inch in the center is very thin. Thin is good. I'll bet you were quite pleased the day you found that piece. I know I would be! I can see why that would be one of your favorite pieces. It's a beauty.

Re: NJ artifacts
Thank you jp. Oval knives / scrapers  (correct term?)  are fairly common here. As you said, they tend to be smaller than that one. That's the biggest one I've found to date.

Re: NJ artifacts
My guess would be an ovoid knife. I've read where caches of similar knives have been uncovered along the Delaware River. The theory is, various small bands would disperse along the creeks in the Fall and Winter and return to the river in the Spring. There would be large runs of shad, sturgeon and other fish and great quantities would be caught. These oval knives buried in the caches would be used by various members of the group to clean and gut the fish. Are some of the fields you hunt in located near a river?

Re: NJ artifacts
Cool. Once again, thank's for the info jp. I have a friend that I know to be truthfull, that told me someone he knows once found a small clay pot full of arrowheads under the roots of an upturned tree. They donated them to a local museum. Can you imagine that?
