Arrowhead from 6/8 dive
Ditchweezil, I've done alot of arrowhead hunting here in NY. I was looking at the thickness and angle of the one you found diving. Many times they would use that type as scraper for hides or tool for processing food. Most of the shooting arrowheads are pretty evenly balanced. They take many different forms; finely chipped triangle, side-notched and spearhead forms. Just thinking outloud. Chris

Re: Arrowhead from 6/8 dive
That's great information. Thanks so much! I have a question though. Does that mean that this is not an arrowhead at all? Do you know what that kind of tool would be called? Thanks again.

Re: Arrowhead from 6/8 dive
Hello Ditchweezil, The tools and "scrapers" that the indians used come in all shape and sizes. Some were used designed for hand tools...for example making other tools. They would heat and strike one piece of flint against another. Other scrapers they would tie to sticks for leverage and use to process food (they're blender) or take the fat from skins to make clothing. I can imagine some would be used for both hunting and tools...just like you can use a knife for more than one purpose. One of my very best indian pieces is black flint 2 1/2" long, shaped just like a Bowie knife. As a kid I would spend hours walking the fields after they were plowed in the spring hunting for them. In a way its like Megaladon teeth...you just don't walk out and pick them up...you have to know where, when, and then be very fortunate to find perfect ones...many are broken by plows, I guess it must be the same with pond dozers. Hope this make sense. We are scheduled to come to Garden City 6/30/02 - 7/6/02. At some point I need to get hold of a digital and send you photos to post. What format would be best for your site? Have a good one!!!! Chris

Re: Arrowhead from 6/8 dive
Hey Chris, Thanks for the great information. You know a lot about artifacts. I think the indian stuff is really cool, but I just don't come across very much of it. I would love to see some pictures. jpgs are best, but gifs would do, too. Good luck finding more arrowheads! dw

Re: Arrowhead from 6/8 dive
I read at one time that when you find an arrow head, you have also found a scraper, a knife etc. That they were used for other things as the need arose, makes perfect sense. I had never thought about it before reading that. I guess sometimes an arrowhead isn't just an arrowhead.
