Re: Welcome to the artifact Discussion Forum!
Ditchweezil, I have a general question. I really enjoy hunting for arrowheads and indian artifacts, but, the problem I am finding is, how do you find out where to look? Do you have any pointers? Most places I have found things in the past are now peoples back yards and parking lots for Taco Bell!! Keep on!!!

Re: Welcome to the artifact Discussion Forum!
hey man - hunting for artifacts is a lot like hunting fossils. you have to know where to look. indians stayed near fresh water, normally on high ground. That's the ideal situation, but normally when I come across them, its in a field that has been recently turned. the reason I find them is because the topsoil where the artifacts are is mixed with the dirt from the deeper excavations. viola - shark teeth and arrowheads right next to each other. look for developments, logging, etc., and eventually, you'll come across some. good luck! dw

Re: Welcome to the artifact Discussion Forum!
Ditchweezil! That is a good pointer. They are building a walmart close to me and the place is leveled, and I am checking it out on Saturday! I know this is the wrong place to ask this question, but me and a buddy (I live in Atlanta)went to Charleston last weekend, totally from the inspiration I have gotten from your site. (I have been collecting shark teeth since I was seven, and your site really got me back into it) We drove around looking for potential places to dig, but had NO luck in finding any. We even drove around Summerville, but again, we were not prepared enough to find a place to look. I know you guys do not want to give away your places, as I am sure there are many more like me looking for places to look, but could you give me a hint as to a couple places? We then went to edisto, and tromped around there for a while, but no luck. So finally we decided to go where we knew we could find some at Cumberland Island. I did have some luck and found a great white tooth over 2 inches, it is the best tooth I have found to date. I have been carrying it for the whole week! I cant stop checking it out. Between me and my bud Chad, we found around 100 teeth. We put on a total of 1200 miles looking for shark teeth. ANY pointers you could give us would be very appreciated. Thanks for all of your help...I have learned tons from scouring your old ditchweezil web site, and the new black river fossils site. You guys are great, and I cant thank you enough for all you put into it. Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!! Eric

Re: Welcome to the artifact Discussion Forum!
Hi Eric, Sorry your trek didn't turn up more positive results but hunting blind is a tough place to start, that's for sure! If they're putting up a walmart near you, there are bound to be overturned piles of dirt. the arrowheads are usually in the top couple feet of dirt, and that's almost always bulldozed in big construction projects. Just make sure you aren't trespassing. For teeth, you'll have to get a little closer to the coast. You asked for a hint on where to hunt in SC - here's your hint: explore this web site. when you find what I'm talking about, you'll know what I mean. Happy hunting! dw

Ditchweezil, Thanks for all the pointers. Sorry if I was too bold in asking for some hints. Your web site DOES give a lot of information. Thanks again for all of your fine work on this site. Eric

Re: Welcome to the artifact Discussion Forum!
I agree with Ditchweezil 100%. Almost all of our finds have come from plowed ground, adjacent to streams. Everything from a trickle that you can step over, to the bigger streams and rivers. Natural lakes are excellent places to look too. If there are some plowed fields bordering them, all the better. People camped and traveled along these water sources for thousands of years.

Re: Welcome to the artifact Discussion Forum!

I just thought of something else on the subject. Most of you probably already know this, but it may be helpful to some. When I first started looking for artifacts, I took the "high ground" aspect a little too far. Only looking on the highest points along streams etc. It dawned on me one day, that high ground can be any place higher than the water would be at floodstage. Once I realised this, I started finding things on a regular basis. I't works well in this area anyway. Sorry if I'm posting too much. I'm obsessed with this subject.

There is no such thing as posting too much. I'm obsessed, too, and that's why this site is here. Enjoy! Post!
