pipe restoration
A few years ago I found a hand-made clay pipe in the Cooper River while diving for meg teeth. I'm told it dates back to the mid 1700s. It is the centerpiece of my collection. Anyway, as the result of a freak accident it is now in 20 different pieces :( Does anyone know where I can get this restored? Please help!!

Re: pipe restoration
Joe, I have a number of clay pipes in my collection as they are (or used to be) semi-occasional finds up here in michigan. They are all 1800's variety I believe, though I am not real good at dating the pipes. I have only 1 whole bowl with stem and cracked the stem in taking it home from the river (ooops). I used superglue to repair it. I know...not what you were hoping for, but I have never heard of anyone to work on them - not that I have ever searched for it either. Sorry...just didn't want you to do without a response. paul

Re: pipe restoration
Joe, i found an indian urn in pieces (all of it ) and decided against superglue because once you use it that's it....no margin for error. Especially on something that has more than one dimension ie. a rounded inside pipe bowl. I used a hot glue gun...sparingly! It allows you to move the pieces to where they fit best together and can be removed to try again with light heat. Miniscule amounts on the broken margins after practicing the fit first works great, sets faster than superglue, and it doesn't soak into the kaolin like super glue does.
