Femur bone of what?
the photo is under the misc. fossil link on this homepage "meg from virginia", i found a really cool bone tha is whole and about six inches long, this is from a river site just east of richmond that also has some pleistocene land mammal fossils, does anyone have a clue what type of animal this came from?

Re: Femur bone of what?

I can't see the bone very well in the pic but it might be a seal finger or toe bone. I tried to find a reference page for you on the seal but I didn't find anything helpful.

Re: Femur bone of what?
thanks, i know the pic is not too clear, i actually have a seal "finger" bone but it is much smaller and knobby on one end only, this fossil is articulated at both ends, looks like i may just be putting it away as miscellaneous,

Re: Femur bone of what?

There are a couple of different types of the finger bones. One has a big knobby almost square end on it and the other is somewhat tapered and jointed on each end. I will post a couple of seal bones tomorrow if I get a chance. I actually know where they are for a change.

Re: Femur bone of what?

I added some pics of seal finger/toe bones under marine mammals - Seal.
