Galeorhinus vs. Pachygaleus lefrevrei
Modified By host on 12/18/2007 5:11:22 PM)

I found a nice little houndshark tooth on the Potomac shore of MD a few weeks ago, but I've encountered some confusion over the scientific name of this species. Dr Kent's book "Fossil Sharks of the Chesapeake Bay Regiion" uses Galeorhinus, but I've seen the name Pachygaleus on several websites. The photos of Pachygaleus look identical to the Galeorhinus, so I assume that these are different names for the same species. Which name is currently considered to be the "correct" one to describe this species? Thanks in advance for any info!

Re: Galeorhinus vs. Pachygaleus lefrevrei

Tom, you're correct in the info you found, the new name "Pachygaleus " replaced Galeorhinus.  This sort of thing kills me because I've been calling them Galeorhinus for over 10 years.  My beloved Galeocerdo Contortus tiger shark teeth also got a new name, so don't make any labels with permanent ink, because before it dries, someone will change the name again.  If you want to keep up on the latest names (or naming conventions), check out www.elasmo.com.  Jim B. does a great job of annotating the current names and referencing the various experts.  As a result, I tend to lean towards using the non-scientific name like "Houndshark" in your case.  That name I think is fairly safe and not about to change.

Daryl.
