There are two pics below; the first pic is of a pair of "whale" teeth that are associated. They are from Calvert Cliffs, MD (zone 10). They are two of approx. 8 teeth that I know were found from the same animal. There were some small pieces of jaw bone found, but they were just slivers unfortunately. What is really interesting about these teeth is the enamel tipped crowns and the rings encircling the roots. Roots have a small hollow hole that extends most of the way up into the tooth.
The "whale" teeth in the second picture are also from Calvert Cliffs, MD (zone 10). I found two of the teeth at the same time within a foot of each other, and the third about a week later. I believe they are associated, and like the other larger whale teeth, I've never seen teeth like these before. They have an interesting enamel crown that tapers sharply to a nice point, and the roots are hollow most of the way up into the tooth.
I've had some folks say that the larger whale teeth are possible Sperm Whale, and the smaller teeth Pilot Whale, but if so what kind? Does anyone have teeth like these or have any ideas as to species? I wonder if LCIV will have whale teeth like these in it.
Daryl.
