I was looking at t$’s post from 1/28 and noticed a fan shaped piece at the bottom of the photo. I found one of these at Westmoreland and still don’t know what it is. Anyone know?
Gimlie, the specimen you are referring to is the last vertebra of a fish, otherwise known as the "fish tail". It's scientific name is called the "Hypural". You can google "hypural" or even "hypural fan" as I've seen it called sometimes as well, to find other descriptions. I found one in a lengthy pdf document at: http://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/57065/1/OP629.pdf
I have several of these myself, but except for a couple really large ones (2.5") that someone said were from a Tuna fish, I'm not sure how to go about getting a proper ID.
cheers,Daryl.
Thanks for the info!
