Squalodon or Dolphine/Porpoise

The wife found these over the weekend at the Aurora spoil piles and I'm not to sure of what they are.  The first one measures 1&5/16" and the second one measres 15/32"       Any opinions....

Re: Squalodon or Dolphine/Porpoise

NCHunter, does the specimen on the left have any enamel on it?  It kinda looks like enamel on the end pointing down in your pic.  I don't know of any porpoise teeth that cylindrical, so maybe it's a really worn squalodon.  I don't see the characteristic circular grooves around the root portion to indicate a whale tooth of some sort.  The second specimen is definitely some sort of porpoise tooth.  The new Lee Creek IV book might have something like it.  I haven't checked my copy.  I did see a tooth similar to this on elasmo.com, under Week#4 News from the Fall 2007 section.  If you go to elasmo.com, click on the "News" link which will bring you to the current Spring 2008 news webpage.  If you scroll all the way down to the bottom of the page you see links for previous seasons (Fall & Spring).  Select Fall 2007 and scroll down to the news for Week #4.  There's a picture of a porpoise tooth there that looks a bit similar to yours.  Unfortunately, many times specimens from the spoil piles are fairly worn and abraded making it difficult to render a positive identification.

Re: Squalodon or Dolphine/Porpoise

Daryl,

Thanks for the help.  I do see the second one on elasmo now, I must have missed it ealier.  As for the first one I have never seen a Squalodon that looks like that.  I will have to pic up a copy of  Lee Creek IV tomorrow.  You can see the enamel a little better in the pic in my post.....Oh by the way im realy brsr0131 but I was messing with my settings the other day and now it says "nc hunter".  I have to get up with DW to get it fixed.  And thanks again for all the help

Re: Squalodon or Dolphine/Porpoise
The first tooth looks like a squalodon, what some refer to as a tusk tooth.  Take a look at M4's 9-24-05 lee creek trip report, he has one under there.  The second tooth is dolphin\porpoise.
