Archaeocete Whale Vertebra
Dorchester County, South Carolina, USA - Pontogeneus brachyspondylus |

When da f0ssZ saw the gigantic whale vertebra I pulled out, he started digging right next to me and found this. Undoubtedly these are from the same whale since they were separated by only a few feet. DF was kind enough to give me the one he found so the two could always be together. Both this and the other big whale vert came from right next to where tha duDe found his sweet auriculatis tooth as well as the tooth pictured in the ground shot on his post from today.... |

This is the giant whale vert that I found digging. its absolutely huge, too - 7 inches in diameter and 6 1/2" tall. m4 took this to the SC Museum for positive identification because its way too big to be Zygorhiza kochii, the species of archaeocete whale normally found at Lafarge. The two species have identical teeth, but can be differentiated by the vertebra. From what he said, this species had not been positively identified from the mine - that is, until now ;-)... |
